No, you're dog is not retarded. Dogs can can be mentally and physiologically impaired just like humans can, but when a dog barks at himself in a mirror, that is just him barking at "another" dog. Dogs have no way of knowing what they look like so they have no idea what a mirror is. All they know is that there is a dog looking at them and they want to interact with it. It baffles them that the "dog" in the mirror doesn't bark back. It's just one of those endearing things that dogs do.

All the other answers that said the dog was responding to its own reflection and not being able to recognize its self are correct. But it does indicate that it is not the smartest dog, not retarded though. A really smart dog will recognize that the mirror is a two dimensional surface and not three dimensional and will ignore the reflection.

He is just playing and sees his reflection. Puppies play alot, and dogs of all ages have fun every now and then playing and doing crazy things! My daughter got an English Bull Dog two months ago, and she has brought so much joy to my daughters life. My daughter is 22, and really was depressed with work and school, and the doctor told her to get a dog. Well she has changed completely, and is a much happier, less stressed individual now, and that makes me happy for her as well. Enjoy your dog making you laugh, they are wonderful for our health and more loyal than most humans!

Yes, your dog is retarded, plain and simple, with me having no psychological background whatsoever! Well, I usually charge $50 bucks, but in this case I'll just give you a tip: buy a cat.... NOT!

no. My dogs do that all the time. It's because he is territorial and he thinks that that is another dog. It should stop eventually.
