The most common problem for tourists is failure to maximize their experience abroad, due to lack of planning. Next is failure to maintain healthy habits while traveling, leading to exhaustion. Here are some solutions.

Travel has three parts, planning, travel, and reflection. When you are actually on the ground somewhere, the last thing you want to spend time doing is "figuring out what we're going to do today." Lets say, for example, you are going to visit the Netherlands and base your travel in Amsterdam. There are a wide variety of travel guides that can point out the major attractions in the city. Three of the best are Lets Go Europe, Europe Through the Back Door, and the Lonely Planet Guide. All of these are written for the budget minded traveler in mind. Buy a map of the city, and then sit down at the kitchen table with your travel guide and map. Get some stickies, and mark the places you are interested in visiting. Next, get on the internet and read about the attractions and think about how you would get from your hotel to that location. After looking at the map, and figuring out what you want to do, a logical order, or sequence for accomplishing your goals will emerge. Next, sit down at the computer and type up an itinerary. This will give you a framework for decision making. Even though you've made it up, don't be afraid to alter it as you experiences guide your travels.

Keeping healthy is really important. Travel can take a lot out of you. I suggest you start walking, and working up to a brisk 40 minute walk every day for a month before you take off. I think the only way to see the great cities is on foot. The WORST way in on a tour bus. Once you get there, start early in the day when its cool and you are refreshed. Get to the major attractions before everyone else and enjoy while you are on the top of your game. After lunch, slow it down and wander along at a leisure pace. Have a good dinner and relax for the evening. Get a good night's sleep. If you are traveling in Asia, Africa, or other areas, get a hold of Rick Steve's book that deals with eating and keeping healthy on the road. He has a lot of great tips for keeping your feet on the road and your butt off the toilet!

The biggest thing I notice is that tourists don't seem to honor local customs of the place they are visiting. In doing this they tend to miss out on a lot of wonderful experiences. Having at least a little bit of a game plan will maximize the time you haveto see more during your visit
