I've made it for years by adding both sweet and dill pickle relish to mayonnaise. The two types of relish give it a better flavor, but you can make do with just one or the other. I also grate a bit of onion on the smallest possible holes of the grater. This gets more onion juice than actual onion in the relish. You just need a bit of the onion to jazz it up, IMO.
You can take this left over tartar sauce and mix it with tuna and chopped celery for tuna salad. If you have leftover tartar sauce you can add a bit of catsup to it and you have Thousand Island dressing. Simple and cheap, huh? :-)

I make my tartar sauce by mixing mayo, pickle relish (or pickles would work just fine with a little of the juice), a dash of lemon juice, and about a tablespoon of mustard powder.
The mustard powder gives the tartar sauce a nice zing. You can add to taste, as it can get a bit hot.

Ideally, you shoud add chopped capers and some boiled egg yolk pushed through a wire strainer. Salt pepper, and a little lemon juice, and minced onion. Relish IS chopped pickles. Sometimes they have a bit of pimento in there for color (that's the red things) but you won't miss them if they aren't there.

Yes, you can just cut up pickles. It's not quite the same but it should work. I usually put pickles in Remoulade sauce when I make it and it's basically jsut a spiced up tartar sauce. You could also try adding chopped garlic, onion, parsley, horseradish, Tabasco, Worcestershire, and/or creole mustard.

Yes, you can definitely mince up your own pickles. It's no different than relish. I add a bit of lemon zest and juice to mine.

chop pickles and a tiny bit of onion (if you like). Season with a little pepper and worcestershire sauce for zip. Chopped olives (with the pimento filling) are good in it. Sometimes I use a bit of chopped hard-boiled egg, too. It's one of those things you can experiment with until you get the taste you like.

Yep. That's what I do. Add some pickle juice to it too. I also add ketchup to my tarter sauce. A little less than mayonnaise.

I have done that before. It will be fine if you cut the pickles up small enough.
