I'm pretty sure most people asking these questions are here to find other resources than seeing a psychologist. So why do people keep replying with "Go to a shrink"? That just seems so redundant. The fact is, if you feel like cutting yourself, then there is obviously something wrong. So why tell them to go see a doctor, when you could give a real answer and share a personal story that is similar to the question at hand? Cause for all to. People are here for answers, not for advice.

to be honest its the easiest thing for people to say. they get points for answering while also feeling like theyve helped. its like a placebo. personally i think that if they write it they dont understand the situation and should be barred form answering anyway but thats just me...

People who answer this way have likely NEVER had health problems. You and I both know that people who post health questions are likely already seeking the ongoing advice of a or many doctor(s). Some people who have never been *really* sick can't understand that doctors don't work miracles, that sometimes many doctors are needed, and that sometimes sickness is an ongoing, unrelentless process. They don't know about the deperation, the pain, and the frustration associated with not being diagnosed, not being treated effectively, how you can lose people who you thought really cared before you got sick...

It's just ignorance, my friend. Try and see where it's coming from and take solace in the fact that you are a rare commodity, able to understand much of what other people obviously can not and take for granted every day.

In cases where people asking questions actually haven't been to a doctor, see HOPE'S answer. She is right on the mark!!

When a person is "stuck in their problem", they will often look past the most obvious of ways to successfully address their problem, either not thinking of it as a valid or serious problem.

Some people fear seeing "a professional" who has studied how to successfully address their problem.

For a life-threatening or safety-threatening or addictive problem there is more at stake than a quick question of "how do you change a tire" It would be irresponsible to give an authoritative answer in such a case, without letting him know that "I am not a Dr., you should see one" for this problem.

In some cases, people can be blind to the intensity of their need. (As was my case in a Domestic Violence situation and in a Mental Health situation) The person's reasoning abilities may be impaired due to their stress level, or functioning. It took a number of people to tell me to leave the situation before the message and the reason sunk into my thinking process, and became MY DECISION. I literally could not see the answer to addressing my problems for myself.

I know that if it could happen to me, there are others out there who have difficulty in the midst of their own problems, and they need to be told to "go see .........." who can help you.

The reason is because it would be the appropriate action to take.
We out in cyberspace cannot reasonably evaluate you. You may not be seeing or cognizant of all symptoms. We cannot prescribe you medications if you need them, an through the computer we cannot offer any sort of hands on assistance.
I find it more incredible that people who have seen their doctor get on here and expect to get better advice from a bunch of strangers.

Because if many people say do see at doctor the people asking the question may listen to the many and go see a doctor.. besides many people here really need to see professional help!!

I hear ya. It grates my onion, too. I also wish people would relax, be of some help, be nice and try to have a heart. And if anyone feels like cutting, they need to call a friend, don't be alone, get out of the house, go for a walk, try to use that energy for anything other than cutting. Some people think saying "go to the doctor" is like tapping you on the head with a magic wand...gee...why didn't I think of that? duh.

People like that just want their two points. Some are just snotty people who enjoy acting like you're an idiot for asking here instead of going to the doctor. I just ignore them.

Well then, if one has problems first one must admit it. Then second talk to someone about it. But mostly if someone is suicidal or has suicidal ideation it is best they consider talk to a doctor of some sort.
