Something becomes addicting when your brain releases chemicals that say "hey, I've got to have this." It is also the mental need for something.
There are two types of addiction: psychological and physiological. Psychological is the mental need for food. For instance, you might drink caffeine. Well, you might become mentally dependent on it. You might tell yourself, "I have to have this to make it through the day." Or, if you take drugs, you might tell yourself, "I have to have this drug to make me happy."
Physiological is the physical need for something. Your brain and body, not your thoughts, tell you that you need it. The thing releases chemicals in your brain, the "feel good" chemicals. Because it makes you feel good, your body and brain want more of it. So, you become addicted.

When the feelings you get from using, tasting, doing it are far superior to feelings of doing something similar.
I am addicted to Del Taco. It's far superior to Taco Bell.

When the chemicals in your brain tell you that you NEED the substance, as opposed to just wanting it.
