It is not your job to police these students. They have parents and school officials to do that. I would invest in some large window shades. The next time she rolled down my street I would close them, as she is passing! Next time tell her to kiss your a**!

I sense there is more a concern over loss of trade from truant children than anything else.

The Truancy Officer would not have come to your cafe unless it was a well-known hang-out of truant children. Hence the frequent drive-bys.

No, it is not your job to decide who should be at school and who shouldn't, but if your cafe is consistently used by school children during school hours, then it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out what is going on.

As for the police driving the Truancy Officer around, would *you* approach a gang of 16 year old boys and start remindng them that they should be in school and asking for their details without some back-up?

Were you a frequent truant? That would explain the way you type ;-)

You are not responsible if kids were skipping school and going into your cafe. This horrible woman has no right to treat you this way. She also had no reason to talk to your husband that way. Did she actually take the girls into custody? I would check with the school board and see exactly what they have to say about this. Of course kids may skip school but it is not your job to stop them for crying out loud. This officer is wasting her time driving past your cafe in a police car. She needs to be doing her job better than that.

Certain locals have laws concerning truancy and whether it is a crime or not. You do not have to enforce them for the police BUT you can't KNOWINGLY contribute to delinquency either.

Since you are unsure if kids are skipping school and using you establishment as a hang out, try the following:

Send a letter to the school board chair. Explain to them in limited detail that you had an "unpleasant encounter" with a truancy officer and you felt the truancy officer's behavior was "unprofessional." Add that you understand there is a need to police the community for truant students. Request that they send you a copy of their policy concerning truant students and off-campus lunching.

Concluding the letter by requesting advice on how to you can be of assistance without alienating potential customers.

Most likely, a school administrator will respond to you. If you are not satisfied with their response, send another letter to the head of the law enforcement agency responsible for handling truancy cases.

Good luck.

i would be really mad too! what she is doing is a type of harrassment! i want to point out to you that school board member are elected, and i would make sure as many people as possible not only hear about this, but witnessed it! what a terrible waste of tax money! i think you should write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and make sure as many people in your community as possible know what is going on. i would take pictures or video as well as evidence. also, if you want to get back at her, and i'm petty so i would lol, after taking pics or video of her in the cop car (especially if you can get a series of several dates and times of her doing this) and i would put them up in my business. and if that didn't stop it, i would file a harrassment suit...that will definitely send the message. i bet a lot of tax payers in your area would be really mad too to know the crazy actions of someone they VOTED in to be in charge of their kids' education!
