I am referring to traditional army here--not special forces or whatnot and I am not talking about size of the standing army or number or troops.

I think it's Israel's IDF, but what do you think and why?

Until recently, I'd have said Israel's IDF because of their combat experience, but they didn't fare so well against Hezbollah last year (although I think it was a leadership issue). Right this minute, I'll have to go with the US Army based on recent experience and their weapon technology. The joint forces concept the US uses is a huge force multiplier. This gives US forces a gigantic edge in combat operations.

Man for Man, Israel has the best Army. All are combat veterans and know what it takes to get the job done. (Ruthlessness)

Though, I think if you pitched the US Army vs. the Israeli Army, it would be a hard war, but US would come out on top because of numbers and amount of equipment we have.

The Israeli Army is much like the Germans. They have some of the best technology and strongest fighters, but we beat the Germans by the amount of equipment we could put on the battlefield.

Such as our tanks during WWII. The US Tanks were very inferior to the German's, but if you have 10 vs 1 that Tank is toast no matter what.

And now not only do we have numbers, but we have some of the best technology.

So...........

Man for Man - The Israelis are #1
Overall - US Army

Well, I guess my opinion would be a bit biased since I am an American and I don't know a whole lot about other military forces. I will say this though, our military is feared throughout the world. That allows us to keep the peace most of the time without conflict. Also, because we are the world's police our brave men and women are trained in every environment and urban setting. Our soldiers also fight to protect those weasel citizens in this country that belittle and show little respect for them on a daily basis. (some made comments for this question, you can smell which ones they are, the stench is unmistakable) For this reason, backed bu our technology and special forces I believe the United States fits that bill.

Combined -or- Total Traditional Army The United States !

Special Force - S.Koren Fighting Tigers

Israel is tough, but not that tough. That's because it is not an all volunteer force. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has to serve his/her time.

I can't speak for today's Armys, but when I was on active duty in the early 90s I always heard from other soldiers that South Korea had good Army. This was from the ones who were stationed there and trained with them.

I would say The Isrealis have gone soft. They went from the ability to take on several countries to being unable to take on terrorist groups even when they held the territory. My vote is on India. It has a low crime and terrorist rate for being boardered be some of the most hostile areas of the world.

The India airforce also bashed up the American airforce in the last wargame the two countries had.

Yes, probably Israel, or South Africa.

I'm highly amused by those saying 'America'. As long as there are a few aircraft carrier battle groups, several squadrons of B-52s, and hot and cold running Coca-Cola on tap, sure.

Israel, hands down. They have nice technology of their own, an indomitable spirit as well as 2 very special allies that make them extremely tough, God and the U.S. You can't lose when your God's chosen people and it goes to show that alot of our blessings as a country are because of our closeness to Israel....
