This article by a second-generation atheist, calling for an atheist culture, really interested me.

How would you make that happen, if you thought that was a good thing?

Um, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden? Mostly secular nations, prosperous, liberal, ring a bell?

Too like herding cats?

The last thing I want to see, personally, would be an atheist aping of "religious" culture, with rituals, ceremonies and rites.
If we have done with that we can go running off "In all directions."
Atheists will tend to be involved in whatever elements of culture particular inspire or nurture them. Art, history, politics, conservation... Family! Football!
The groups and communities so formed will not tend to centre on atheism.
My atheism is only an active thing while stimulated by the presence of active theists. I don't want to sing hymns to atheism or the great atheists. My culture (I make no great claims for it) is found elsewhere.

Sounds interesting...but strange. You can't build a culture on the fact that you don't believe something. It's not an issue for me, as long as atheists are treated like everyone else. Fortunately, where I live, this is mostly the case.

Do something. Take up photography and go to the gym. If you must create a club, make sure everybody is welcome. I'm in a club and I've never said a Christian was not welcome.

I read the article and liked it very much. It reminds me of how we Hippies all believed they'd be legalizing marijuana any day now. ...any day now. ...any day now. ...any day now.

Please forgive my cynicism, I'm old and battle-weary. It's a great article and a great idea. Do you suppose what's been happening here could be the beginnings of a true American atheist culture. It's a nice thought....

Great stuff!
And I for one believe that one day, humanity will finally wake up and be religion free. And that religion will simply be an embarrasing footnote in human history. People will read about it, shake their heads and wonder how anyone could be so gullible.

You can't- the only thing we have in common is a lack of beliefs.
