I like Harry Potter and i'm a Christian and there are PLENTY of other books that are about witchcraft. This is FICTION it is NOT an instruction manual on how to cast spells which is why some christians don't let their kids read it or watch the movies. Same thing with why they don't let children watch violent movies or movies with a lot of cussing. While I wouldn't let my young child (if i had one) watch rated R movies...kids need imagination and all parents need to do is explain that these things are not real they are make believe. A lot of people I think are trying to blame movies, books, and television for bad behavior and/or other odd behavior...

I think it largely depends on the person. I can not think of a time when I did not know fact from fiction. The westerns I watched every night as a kid had the bad guy shot each episode and the same actor would appear next week on another series. I always knew what squibs were. The little bags of red dye and syrup that explode to simulate blood. However, in the 5th grade, one of my classmates actually thought the Seaview, from Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea series, was real! Some of the questioners here sound like they have problems separating the real from fiction. The Da Vinci Code ring a bell? His painting of The Last Supper was not a photograph! These people would have a problem with Harry Potter and the like. As far as the movies go, I like them. Not #1 on my hit parade, but very good, well done. I plan to see #5 but will not buy the DVD set. I own the Star Wars DVD set. I read a series called The Destroyer about assassins because of the outrageous humor. Not for a moment do I confuse this fiction with reality or how I treat fellow humans. I would also never go near any of the things accompanying occult practices as that might open a path for demon influence. In building houses, only a small crack in insulation or the foundation allows termites, mold, and makes your other insulation you paid an arm and a leg for, useless. So I do not underestimate the ability of evil.

I live up north and love Harry Potter. Anyone who can get kids to read a 1000+ page book has got to be doing something good.

Harry Potter is a book of fantasy fiction. It has no more to do for or against Christianity than the Lord of the Rings or Eragon or Star Trek.

Jo Rowling has stated that she is a Christian, and does not believe in magic. In the books it has Christian themes -- like Harry being saved by the sacrifice of his parents, good versus evil, etc.
And yes I do believe that adult christians are more afraid of the books than kids are. And these adults are ones who actually do believe in magic. They think that kids will try it out and get sucked in to it. The rest of us don't care because even if kids try, they aren't going to make anything "wingardium leviosa" by waving a stick around.
I'm not a Christian but I am a fan of Harry Potter.

I'm a christian and I love Harry Potter. I think some adult Christians don't like it is because they think that it will influence their kids in a negative way, such as get the kids involved with witchcraft and magic. Others see it as harmless fun and entertainment.

I'm a Christian and I have no interest in the Harry Potter books because it just isn't my preferred genre of literature.
I think it's silly to "ban" literature- it just makes people want to read it more, i.e. John Updike's "Rabbit" series.
I'd much rather read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes stories from the Strand Magazine)- that's my taste!
