i have reset it by pushing the button behind the cover but it dosent work it just keeps telling me to reset it. any ideas why it is doing this?

Has it got two power connectors, one to the ignition, and one to an always live circuit. Are both connected?

It could be a combination of factors.
If the cartridge has been jammed in upside down, it would account for CD's not playing and the Cartridge not ejecting.
CD's not playing could also be due to you accidentally loading them upside down in the Cartridge, but that would not explain the cartridge Jam.
If you have not accidentally Jammed in the Cartridge, then take the unit back as its faulty.
