When can I file a do not call complaint?

If your number has been on the National Do Not Call Registry for at least 31 days and you receive a call from a telemarketer that you believe is covered by the National Do Not Call Registry, you can file a complaint at the registry’s website at www.donotcall.gov or by calling the registry’s toll-free number at 1-888-382-1222 (for TTY, call 1-866-290-4236). To file a complaint, you must know either the name or telephone number of the company that called you, and the date the company called you.

How do I file a do not call complaint? What do I need to file a complaint?

You can file your complaint on the registry’s website, www.donotcall.gov, using the File a Complaint page. You must know either the name or the phone number of the company that called you. You also must provide the date that the company called you and your registered phone number. You may provide your name and address, but it’s not required for you to submit a complaint. You also may call the registry’s toll-free number at (1-888-382-1222) to file a complaint (for TTY, call 1-866-290-4236).

What happens to my complaint?

Do not call complaints will be entered into the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel system, a secure, online database available to more than 1,000 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies. While the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help us investigate the company and could lead to law enforcement action.

What if I get a telemarketing call, but can’t get the telemarketer’s name or phone number?

For law enforcement officials to take action on your complaint, they need either the telemarketer’s name or phone number, as well as the date of the call. If you want to report a do not call violation, please get that information.

Why should i have to pay for caller ID, it's over $15 a month. I signed up not to be called, not to be pestered. I am smart enough to research and go out and get what I want or need. I also update my do not call periodically and it says i am already on the list.

These companies do not give their name as they know I can file a complaint. They also hang up when digitally dialed based on tone of voice. The do not call was all working under Clinton and, under Bush. The current overflow and BS is because a law was passed by our govt about 2 summers ago, that allows businesses if they have a presence in your state ability to call you regardless of the list. Also if they do business with you, they and their affiliates can call (that is easy to stop). Bad enough the political calls and the charity calls which we cannot stop.

Calgon take me away.

It does not work for several reasons:

1. The Government has made the pursuit of scofflaws the responsibility of the Federal Government and not local prosecutors. So you tell me, I can file paperwork against a telemarketing firm or investigate white collar crime with more $$ involved. Where is the government going to spend their money. BTW, before you blame Bush, remember this law was one of Clinton's great strokes of genius, only he provided no funding for pursuit of prosecution.

2. The law provides for citizens to file for damages when the law is violated. We however like to complain, but get lazy when it comes time to pursue the legal route. Yes, it takes time, yes it isn't easy. However, there is a gentleman that has won $6,000 so far with only three of his cases having been heard so far. If he has 100 filed (he has more) and he wins the same amount in each one. It will be well worth his time and effort.

3. Finally, people need to go back and refile their requests periodically as their names will fall off as systems change and they are besieged by telemarketers.

So what else works? Blowing a whistle in their ear, blocking calls with privacy manager, not answering calls from numbers you do not recognize. All of these can be effective deterrents, although the first one is a little over the top in my opinion.

I don't know why they don't work but I do know as a telemarketer that I would get alot of complaints about ppl saying take me off your list I am on a do not call list.
Getting pissed is not goint to help things and arguing or hanging up won't either. You need to get a private number thats that. Hangups at my place of employment were considered a call back later. And if you get pissed and foul -mouthed the employee may just think it fun and assign you a call back. Which means more phone calls. And when you asked to speak to the Supervisor theses buisness are to busy to deal with another irate customer so they let any other employee listen to you complain and then loosely promise you they will never call again..>>>>but they will...

I wonder the same darned thing. The reason being is because they're calling from over seas for one and another is that they may not follow the laws and are risking it when it comes to getting sued on a per call basis. I'd say a simple solution is change your number, keep it unlisted and give it out only to those who you know and trust. Also try this. Get rid of your land line entirely and go to cell phones.

Next time they call, ask them to put you on their own Do Not Call list. Remind them that if they call you again, you can sue for harrassment.
