Jedi, yes they are real. They might not be very recent, as in 2007-recent, but they are pretty recent. The nonbelievers includes, non religious, atheists, and agnostics.

Why do you people think these stats are wrong? Are you in denial? There are way more non believers than yo think there is.

"The Universal Almanac, reports that there are 805,900,000 non-religious and 210,500,000 atheists in the world. This accounts for 16.9% and 4.4% respectively, for a total of 21.3%."

And Earl D, I never said they're non believers, but they're certainly not religious, that's why they fall into that category. We don't necessarily have to call that category "non-believers", but it's way shorter than "People who do not follow a certain religion, agnostics, atheists, and people who don't care about whether there is a god or not."

Yes.
Fortunately public school systems are getting more and more efficient. Since religion thrive on ignorance, when more people get educated, religious superstition goes down.

I think the world is becoming more divided. Some people are turning away from religion and some are turning to it, but their views are much stronger than views in previous generations.

I have seen a few movies where the end of the world is coming (such as an asteroid hitting the earth) and one group of people partied, pillaged, stole, raped, etc. Another group went to church and worshiped. This was Hollywood, but that is the idea.

Don't know where you got your figures from, but they don't match mine (CIA and World Religion sites and the Encylopledia Britanica).

Must have gotten them from Richard Dawkins.

Christianity is over 2 billion (Catholics make over 1 billioin).

Islam is over 1 billion.
Atheists are about 10% and you can't include DELINE TO STATE in those figures.

Agnostics are NOT "non-believers" they are "wait and seeers"

If a person declines to state there is only a 50/50 chance

Now there is a decline in religion, especially among the young, but we are talkings millions in a world of billions.

YOu are taking a shift of less than 1% a year.

Some switch relgioins. Some eventually go back in later years.

To be an ATHEIST you have to FORMALLY DECLARE SUCH and as such, that makes you a member of a phiosophical group, which is another way of calling something a belief system or religion.

"non believers" are different. they don't hold up Richard Dawkins to be a god or prophet.

They don't beleive in God, Jesus, Budaha, Muhammad, Allah OR DAWKINS

To subscribe to a FORMAL belief system (which is what Atheism is, it's an organized formal system) is simply switching affiliations.

To VOTE in the American Primaries REQUIRES you FORMALLY align yourself with a PARTY, be it socialist, communists, peace and freedom, democrat, republican, libertarian otherwise you can't vote in the primaries.

If you don't affiliate, you can vote in the General Elections as a total INDEPENDENT with NO affiliation.

A poltical party is a political party and the LIBERTARIANS have to acknowledge that THEY ARE an organized political entity with an agenda.

Yes. I read something not too long ago that Christianity in America has been declining the most. Good. We need some diversity and it's nice to see people are thinking for themselves instead of mindlessly following what they were raised with without a second thought.

Yes I do. But I think it is because a lot of people think their religion is the only way that is right. People are starting to realize that there is more to religion than their church talks about. I believe that their is a common ground with most religions. Most people believe there is SOMETHING greater than us, a FORCE if you want to call it that. But nobody really knows what they should call it or do to praise it. Since most religions do not allow this type of OPEN idea thinking, they do not even know what religion to call themselves.

Yes they are real. I also read a story today as a matter of fact that Christians/Religion are at an ALL TIME HIGH in College's. More students now then ever are voluntarily taking religion courses and majoring in religion.

We are still in the fight!

2007-05-03 15:23:39 · answer #8 · answered by chersa 4 · 2 0

Those stats are definitely incorrect.

Cheryllynn -- More college students are taking religion classes because they don't understand what all the fuss is about in the world. They aren't taking the classes to become religious, they are taking classes to understand religious perspectives.

I'm an agnostic and a religion major-- gaining knowledge is the key to eliminating ignorance. DUH
