They're part of the big circle, just like humans and everything else is. Everything on the planet has a purpose and a reason for being.

The only difference between animals and man is that man has a soul. Well actually, if you believe Aristotle, everything possesses a soul, it just depends on how developed the soul is.
As for the purpose of animals and plants on this earth. . .to pass on there genes to the next generation.

Man has the power of reasoning and deliberate thought, thus a soul. Animals have no such abilities despite they've taught monkeys to memorize words and mimic human speech sounds. Interesting, but it hardly puts them on the same level as man. I don't think they'll be issuing driver's licenses to the primates any time soon.

I believe that sentience is an inherent property of the universe. If one believes in evolution, it becomes apparent that we are moving from simple to complex. All different species are required to maintain enough biodiversity to support life. The more complex animal life has become, the more sentience it displays. Crows have demonstrated the ability to make tools. Elephants and dolphins reveal self-awareness when facing a mirror. Humans are just an extremely successful animal. Let's hope our success doesn't lead us to pridefully destroy our planet and kill ourselves.

"We are parts of the universe, trying to understand itself."
