I think a lot of it has to do witht he weather. The enormous amounts of snow, the sub zero temperatures, and the pavement. The roads take a lot of abuse just from the weather. All the salt and plowing in the winter cause a lot of pavement problems. I do agree that Michigan roads are the worst around. It is so noisy when you are traveling down the interstate.

Don't forget the fact that Michigan has the highest weight limits in the nation for trucks - 164,000# without a special permit, more than double what most states are. The roads take a beating!

Probably from the winters with ice & snow and snow plows.

But Lousiana &Mississippi have the worst roards in the USA because of low population and a the pooerest gdp, gnp, and average income of its citizens it makes collecting taxes and allocated the tax money for roads difficult.

because michigan sucks. the government can't manage its money so the roads don't get fixed right. now all the businesses are moving out of michigan so the tax base just went down so now the roads will only get worse. my advice is don't come to michigan. i know i'm getting out SOON

for you dummies who are saying your states roads are bad look it up Michigan is number 3 last time i checked i don't remember the site was trying to look for it just but the reason Michigan roads are so bad is because we live so close to Canada and we get all the semi truck going to Canada and not to include out winters salt isn't good for the road. my step sis live in in grayling, Michigan her roads are good because they dont use salt and no semis

Obviously, you have not been to California anytime in the last 30 years, as roads have sucked here since the 70's.

Brutal winters! Water gets into a crack,
it freezes and thaws. That's how potholes are made.
