You know what if fighters did not die, have outside distractions, change trainers, or just in general did not do the wrong things to cost them fights or their lives would it be different for them? Example: What if Tyson would have kept someone to keep him focused on his boxing abilities would he reign as Heavyweight Champion longer? Any other thoughts on other fighters and what their career would be like if they did not do this or that?

If Oscar Bonavena didn't party all the time and would have trained like Marciano he would have been the greatest heavyweight ever. You can make statements like this about almost any fighter with great ability who never attained the greatness of fighters like Ali, Duran, Louis, Foreman, Robinson, etc.

If Cleveland Williams wasn't shot would he have lost less fights? I am sure he would have.
If Quarry wasn't a bleeder and had taken great fighters late into fights, what then?
If Charley Burley was white everyone would know who he was and he would have had many title fights.

You can make up your own long list of these type of situations.

It could become distracting to not have any distractions outside of training. A fighter is more likely to have more heart for the fight, more drive behind training from outside cause like family matters. Fuel for the fire man, ever seen Ciderella Man or Ali. They were real top fighters who faced issues that were outside of training.

As far as Tyson goes, he might not had been as good as he was without all the outside crap. Him being pissed off probably increased the amount of adernaline he needed for a little extra power behind his punch. Not to say Tyson does not have skill he does but not of the level De La Hoyas on. Power strength is all he really had, take De La Hoya he is more technical than Tyson.

As you well know...Fighters are strange animals...usually coming from nothing...and having nothing...then having it all...and 25 people telling them what to do with it...Any one who comes from nothing(and lets face it,most of the greatest boxers/ warriors throughout the years have come out of poverty/abuse)and then has it all is gonna lose focus..have clouded judgment...

Smitty is a hard man, but he is right, there are no "do over's" in life. It is what it is.
