OK, I have found it! The problem I have been having is how to punish those who are in our country illegally, but not spend BILLIONS deporting them or detaining them in our prison system. So, here it goes:

1. We make it easier for them to get work visas. The only stipulation is: they have to learn English. They get their work visas, learn English, pay their taxes, etc.

2. Anyone (after a certain period) caught in this country illegally is given jail time. Not deportation, jail time. Anyone employing or renting to an illegal immigrant gets jail time, unless the illegal had fake documentation, and then the illegal gets MORE jail time.

3. Now for the genius part. Anyone who is now in this country illegally CAN get a work visa, but... they are put on lifetime probation. If they ever commit a crime, EVER, they get a much more severe punishment for the crime than usual, and deportation, or they are released, or whatever..

So, will it work?

The only thing I got out of all that, you are in favor of that cheap illegal labor to make those with richer while at the same time supporting cutting the feet out from under Americans who don't make a decent living wage because they earn their living off the sweat of their brow instead of through being educated, like you. Your suggestions would cost a ton of money. Secure our borders and ship those in this country back, forcefully if necessary. As you can see by one poster, their is no respect for this country, only their want for our money.

In principle, your idea is to offer illegal aliens some incentive to come forward and identify themselves, rather than just using increasingly draconian measures to force everyone to 'prove' citizenship. That's a good idea, I think, in principle.

I don't know if some of the specifics would work, and some, like 'Lifetime probation' would certainly be unfair (much more severe crimes than illegal border crossing have a statue of limitations). Jail time, for instance, is impractical - jails are already overcroweded - deportation is still the only real option for those who's only crime is immigration violations. Deported individuals could be logged in a fingerprint or DNA databose, however, and that could be counted against them in the future.

I also think it would make sense to give preference to legal immigrants. For instance, while you might give work visas to illegals, citizenship might be delayed until after legal immigrants begining the process in the same year have had thier chance to be naturalized.

Number 1 is not so bad but number 2 would cost a ton of money, do you know how much the cost to house criminals in the prison system is? The massive number of those who get caught would require us to build more and more facilities to house the offenders, we are overcrowded in the prison system as is.

I like the part about the employers though, THEY could actually put a huge dent in this problem if they would but the almighty dollar is more important, the taxpayer ultimately carries the entire burden on their back.

Oh and by the way like others have said we would still be rewarding law breakers and this would encourage even more illegal flow into the US.

Good try..

do you realize how much money it takes to jail someone? do you also know that the "crime" illegal immigrants can commit like what? Stealing, drugs... if they can evade the law this way what makes you think they won’t evade the law for that?
also, if you are on probation, then you have a probation officer- do you know how many (non-corrupt) probation officer would have to be hired?
Your plan seems ideal, but will not work. What if some more came, do they get granted VISAs as well? I mean, if they can sneak in before, what’s to stop them from coming in now?

Make all the jailed illegals build the prison. Have then clean the sides of road to get money to pay for the electric the toilet paper beds all the stuff needed, have them plant gardens to feed themselves. That might work and for that anti lib guy I want him to be the first person there.

It might work, I just HATE the idea of allowing (or having to allow) people who have >broken the law(s)< to basically, get a free pass!

I understand that it would be very costly, and very hard to track down, arrest, and deport all that are here already.....It's just that it is frustrating that we have let it get this bad...and that all of those who are "Playing by the rules", are getting screwed over, while these Criminals are being (Basically) rewarded for doing so.

I'm only second generation native born American, and ALL of my ancestors had to follow the rules....and Were happy to do so!

So.....WTF!?!?!

So, your ideas might work, >But< The FIRST thing we need to do...is to secure the boarders! Without doing this FIRST....Anything else we do is doomed to fail.

T.S.

Actually, my idea was 3 years mandatory conscription. After spending 3 years in the military and earning an Honorable Discharge, then they can go to the front of the line for citizenship.

Hey- on first read, that sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Although I'm sure extremists on other sides will say something else. The English part is tricky, since it isn't an official language, but I do think it's in everyone's best interest if everyone here on a permanent basis can speak and understand the basics.

Good job!

no work visas for the ones who sneak in. take a look at this and see what Americans are doing because our govt will not enforce our laws concerning the illegal invasion. http://www.times-journal.com/report.lasso?wcd=8854 why ar Americans going to jail who are trying to defend our land from illegal invaders and the illegals get to run rampant. it's wrong for these Americans to go about it this way, but Americans are frustrated with the govt.

I think you're on the right track. Illegal means exactly that: against the law. When we do things that are against the law, we are punished. There's no justification for it.

If a person is caught stealing to feed his family, he is still punished, because stealing is a crime.
