They're gullible because they have this silly belief that Doctors spend 8 or more years in post-graduate study, borrow or beg 100's of thousands of dollars, work long, hard hours, make life or death decisions and expose themselves to frivolous lawsuits, just to do what the drug salesmen want them too.

Everyone's gullible in some way. A normal person thinks that his or her doctor is someone more trustworthy than the average Joe on the street. Thus, when your doctor prescribes drugs, you don't automatically go for a second opinion, nor do you go cynical (or paranoid) with a "you sold out; you're the puppet of the drug companies!"
But yes. Doctors have no money in prevention of disease, only treatment. Drug companies reward doctors for prescribing their drugs, whereas a more natural solution doesn't pay the bills quite as well.
So, basically: "why?"
"don't they realize?" They might agree with you: OK, that makes sense. However, when the doctor gives them a prescription, they don't think to mistrust the expert.
Also, using drugs in people is like hacking a computer. It's faster than trying to coax and tease the human or computer into working more efficiently through "official" channels (upgrading from the company or proper health maintenance)

At the same time, it's our role of patients to trust the doctor for our well being. It doesn't hurt to do a little research on the drug when it's prescribed. But yes, doctors do have a preference in drugs prescribed and will only change when problems occur in those drugs.

why do people assume that just because they are trying to make money then they must be selling products that are bad for you. if that was the case then everything is bad for you because down the line someone is making money on it. the FDA approves ALL prescription drugs and are a non-biased third party. so once its approved by the FDA the drug company can push the doctors all they want to use their medications over another companies competing product. Its called a free market

Maybe some responsiblity lies within the patient. Ask questions and do some research. Just because drug companies actively market their product doesn't mean it isn't a good drug...

I think we tend to forget that our health and treatment for diseases should be a cooperative effort with our doctor. It seems that we put more into researching a school paper than we do in assisting in our own treatment.

One other thing. Drug ads give vague symptoms that all of us recognize in ourselves i.e. have you ever been sad, does your skin itch, are you ever anxious or upset.......WOW, I must need their drug
