You don't need any kind of a degree. You need to know how to write well, how to communicate well, how to schmoose well. You also need to know how to read people, but most importantly, you need contacts. You need to know people in the publishing world, in the print and broadcast media world, even in the political world.

Advertising/public relations with a journalism minor would be the most direct. English, theatre, business, would also work. What matters most is your ability to doggedly pursue a goal, your ability to develop and retain media contacts, and your willingness to protect, nuture and promote your client.
