Somewhere in Australia it's always tourist season, it just depends what you want to see and do.
Just by the way.
Our beaches are never closed.
Here is an example of why.
The further north you go it's warmer the further south it's cooler.
Water Temperature Gold and Sunshine Coast:
Jan/Feb (summer) 25C°/77F°
Mar/Ap (autumn) 23C°/73F°
May/June (winter) 21C°/70F°
July/Aug (winter) 19C°/66F°
Sept/Oct (spring) 20C°/68F°
Nov/Dec (summer) 23C°/73F°
Also, poppawick is right
"bee stings" (a light custard bun with sugar syrup and almonds on top) and
"pavlova" (meringue dessert served with whipped cream and a mixture of fresh fruit)
are delicious.

I personally prefer the Fall and winter times. I found less tourists. The people there are friendly, the tour bus drivers are knowledgeable. While I was there I went to the Great Barrier reef. I left from Port Douglas a beautiful seaport. I head quartered my self in Cairnes (prounounced CANS. I saw the rainforest , took the sky ride where Ihad lunch at the Abrigional Village, learned about their history, got lessons on boomerang and spear throwing. I saw Alice Springs and Ayres Rock (Called Ularu) My hotel was the Sails of the Desert .While I was there I took a side trip to Fuji it was beautiful and the people were very friendly. 1 American dollar is worth 2 of theirs. They all speak english. It was a British crown colony. Oh try a bee sting for dessert also a Pravola, both are delicious.

It depends entirely on where you are going. Tourist season in southern Australia is the summer from October to March with a heavy concentration around Christmas. In northern Australia it is the dry season, May to September but April and October see fewer people and roads are often open then. In the wet season, roads to popular places such as Kakadu and Lichfield National Parks or the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation are closed by high rivers and floodwaters.
If you are going to Alice Springs/Uluru, mid summer is very hot and is not a good time to be walking around and certainly not good for climbing the Rock. If you want to go skiiing, you are restricted to July and August when there is snow.
Beaches in Australia are never closed unless conditions are dangerous and you can go swimming every day of the year if you want to do so. In northern Australia, winter (the dry season) is the safest time to use the beaches as box jellyfish are there in the wet season and they can kill you.
One thing to remember about Australia is that it is big. You will find concentrations of tourists in certain areas but generally they are well spread out. Decide what you want to do and make your plans to do those things. If you want the Festival of Sydney with its open air free concerts, come in January. If you want the Mardi Gras festival, that's in February with the parade in early March. If you want to go to the Birdsville races, that's the first weekend in September. The Melbourne Cup is the first Tuesday in November. The beercan regatta in Darwin is in July. Henley on Todd in Alice Springs is in August. All these events are popular with locals as well as tourists and you will see more locals than tourists attending them. Each city has its parades and festivals, check them out and decide what you want to see then plan without worrying about tourists.

Tourist season is probably most heavy in December and January, which are our summer months. Our tourist season is not like Europe in July where there are too many people, so I wouldn't be overl concerned with that aspect. I would visit based on the weather. Spring, Summer or Autum (Fall). Queensland and especially Cairns are very hot in Summer though.
The currency conversion has changed significantly. One US Dollar will only buy you $1.20.
