I'm going to be moving this summer and want some tips for renting a truck. I know I should rent as early in advance as possible, but what days are the least expensive to rent? I only need one day and don't have that much stuff(2-br apartment), so how many hours should I reserve it for? Also is there any other way to save some money with this? Or is there a cheaper company that can move my stuff across town for me?

I've heard negative things about Uhauls service and trucks.

Check out Budget, or Pods or Pack Rats.

My fiance and I moved 8 miles away and used Pack Rat and had no issues and it was actually cheaper than Uhaul or Budget or Pods.

I would suggest Penske if you have one. They have always been cheaper for me compared to UHaul or Ryder. Go to all three trucking companies websites and get instant quotes. Also, Penske has a AAA discount, not sure about the others. Penske usually has a special web price too.

Least expensive is during the week. EVERYONE moves on weekends. Tues - Thurs probably best. If you have help loading and unloading, you might be able to do it in one day. But I would think that 2-days would be tops. Truck rentals are by the day, not the hour.

As far as having someone else move it for you, that will ALWAYS be more expensive than just renting a truck and doing it yourself. However, get price quotes from small moving companies like 2 Guys & a Truck or something you have in your area. The cost difference might be worth it to you. GL

Check Rider's as well, they often have better rates.
Check private movers like 'Starving Students' or similar where you live (yellow pages).
