Yes, I have never been arrested but I went to see a family member, and I was treated so rudely by everyone. The ones that do it..its because they feel like they can get away with it.

You have to remember the officers are human beings also! The difference between the citizen and the officer is the officer sees the problems and deals with them everyday.
Next time you see a serious accident on the roadway, look at how ALL the traffic in ALL the lanes slow down to "rubberneck" and "lookieloo" to satisfy a natural curiosity of seeing the abnormal.
Now think of how the law enforcement officers see this type of situation on a daily basis.
Officers become discouraged at the reckless disregard for the simple rules of the road and laws that are supposed to protect us. Seeing the victimization all the time gets to a point where you become frustrated! More frustrating is how you deal with the same "bad guys" over and over! After dealing with MOSTLY "bad guys" occasionally you stop a good citizen. Is there a difference between the good person and bad person in the officers eyes....no....not at first!
So, naturally, the officer is in a "cautious mode" until things are appropriately evaluated and the officer is certain there's not an officer safety issue involved in the citizen contact.
It would be nice if you could turn off the emotional side, but then that would remove any possibility of descretion when writing tickets or making arrests.
Don't forget to add all the monday morning quarterbacks and second guessers! Those who think after having ample time to second guess a decision made by the officer who had to make a split second decision! It's GREAT having time to make the right decision when you're not looking down what appears to be the barrel of a bad guys gun!
The media seeks sensationalized stories with half-baked reporting and the general public goes into a feeding frenzy with the police being the meat!
Forget all the slanderous comments with slurs and stereotypical accusations....cops are just humans too!
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to show a bit of light from the other side!

first common sense is not common, even the most innocent person who was involved in a traffic stop or collision can be hard to deal with. A cop is patient, but is also human, and in dealing with the public day in and day out, there are days where patience will be shorter than others. The other reason is an officer needs to gain control of a situation from the second they arrive. This does not always include being nice. An officer does not know the person they are engaging and must treat everyone as a potential threat. The only thing an officer cares about is their safety, the safety of the other officers, and going home at night. Everything else, including the feelings of the offender, or other individual, are of secondary concern.

No its more than letting feeling getting involved, they are daily influenced by genuinely bad people. The old saying goes you become like the people you mix with. After a few years of being nice you slowly without realizing it start to act like the people you are arresting - unpleasent people.
If suspects behaved well and respectful to police I'm sure you would not be asking this question.
The police must be trained not to be bad to people but in time the training must wear off.

Because they keep dealing with these same scum buckets on a daily basis. It starts to weigh on the mind. Everyday these criminals are out on the street hurting people and destroying communtities. Polic officers are just sick of it. When a police officer lets his emotions get involved it shows he cares; although it doesn't always end up good (i.e. Rodney King).

We are used to dealing with most people when they are behaving at their worst. High, drunk, angry, stressed, dissolute, embarrassed, and ect. It takes someone with an indominable will to not let the negativity dealt with on a daily basis get into their personality. Most cops are just reflecting what the attitudes they come in contact with- without even realizing it- but some are just a@#holes.

Yes, police officers have feelings........you just said it.
So let's take the feelings out of law enforcement and have robots issuing citations for ALL traffic violations, locking up both parties involved in domestic batteries, shooting every time the law books say it's appropriate.
Would you like that world? I wouldn't.

now thats a pretty stereotypical statement don't you think? All Police officers are emotional hot heads? hardly, maybe in your neck of the woods, but the officers in our town a friendly, and I only know of one who is kind of a hot head, the others are pretty understanding. Maybe you got to move, this is a big country, and Many people don't have a problem with there local police officers.

I believe the people just give The police a hard time when they try to get the information from them.Police have hard Jobs and when people don't cooperate it makes it harder for them, they always have to be on guard because they could be shot at and killed so the stress makes it hard for them.

sometimes its kinda hard not too... next time you find yourself in a possibly life threatening situation see how easy it is to control all your feelings of fear, anger, etc. Training helps but the human mind can only take so much... actually when i watch shows like "Cops" i am often amazed at how much restraint many officers show when dealing with someone who just put their lives in mortal danger for something as stupid as driving with in expired license... if where the cop I'd probably start hittin' people

Its a very very stressful job and criminals just never learn, they keep arresting the same people for the same stuff and they feel so sick of it and their blood pressure rises. Thats why I didnt want to be a cop. I hate dealing with stupid people and i know eventually one day i would lose it and unload on someone.
