My preferred firearm is any double-action first pull, single-action thereafter handgun chambered for the .45 acp. While the 1911 had shortcomings as someone has mentioned, the platform was an amazing starting point and you can buy some fantastic firearms designed off of this platform.

I also have a .30-06 w/ a mauser action and peep sights that my great uncle made (he was an avid gunsmith) that is one of the finest shooting rifles I have ever used.

My favorite target shooting is shooting clay pigeons, so a basic 12 gauge is always enjoyable.

Oh, and to the person who mentioned the Barrett, it isn't a sniper rifle, despite what counter strike taught you. Purposely firing on human targets with that thing is against the Geneva conventions. It's intended use is for taking out light armored vehicles. Besides, if you want a sniper rifle, the M24 based off of Remingtons Model 700 is the way to go.

Like some of the other guys, I can't pick just one. So here are some of my favorites.

Shotguns: Fox Model B 12 gauge SXS double
Centerfire Rifles: Browning BLR in .358 Winchester (Most accurate rifle I've ever owned.)
Pedersoli made Rolling Block in .45-70 loaded with blackpowder.

Handguns: Colt M-1851 Navy Model .36 cal
Mason-Richards Conversion M-1851 Navy in .38 S&W Spl
Uberti-made Single-Actuion Army copy in .44 S&W SPL
S&W M-686

Rimfires: Marling Golden Model 39-A
Ruger Super Single-Six Magnum
Iver Johnson TP-22

You will notice that the only semi-auto in the bunch is the Iver Johnson TP-22. The rest are single-shots, doubles, or manual repeaters. Without Uncle Sweetheart buying ammo, it is cheaper to take slow aimed shots rather than just rip off a 30 round magazine.

Wow, tough question. I will say the AR-15 platform, due to the fact that it is the one that I am most familiar with. I have a bushmaster - 16 inch barrel that eats up ammo quicker than I can buy it.

I also have a great time with my trail gun: the .45 LC Ruger Vaquero. I spend a lot of time in the back country, here in Idaho, and I purchased it as a defense weapon after a scary run-in with a cougar 10 years ago. At first it seemed strange with the western-style handgrip, but once I fired it, I was in love. It is the only firearm in my collection that I have made no modifications to.

I can't choose just one, either. In shotguns, it'd have to be an "Elsie" that's been used by five generations of my family. In rimfires, a Winchester 63. In handguns, a Ruger Redhawk in 41. My favorite bolt rifle is a Rem 700 Mtn, probably because it came out of the box a distinct piece of crap, and I put a lot of sweat into it to make it a real shooter. But overall, I might have had the most fun about ten years ago with a buddy's gun. It's a 500-3" BPE double, external hammers of course, and he had no idea what load would regulate. Working up a load that would shoot, and trying that monster case on little whitetail, was a hoot. Wish he'd sell it to me.

My Browning Hi Power.

While many people think that their John Browning-designed Colt 1911 is the best pistol ever made, I beg to differ.

The designer himself knew of the 1911s shortcomings, and corrected many of them when designing the Hi Power or P35.

It's a modern masterpiece that's often overlooked in favor of modern, ugly, double-action pistols that don't even come close to the design.

My Favorite gun to shoot, is a Pattern 14 Enfield made in 1916. It still will shoot a two inch or smaller group from the bench at 100 yards.

My favorite is my Kimber Custom II. Not the best 1911 but its still a damn good one. Nothing like being able to hit anything you want to with in 50 feet. Last year while I was hiking on my uncles land I took my first deer with it. Plus I find the recoil and report alot more pleasant than the modern 9mm wonderguns. One day I hope to be burried with it.

I love to shoot a 22LR pistol or rifle.I have a couple of pistols that I like to shoot at targets or just plinking around in the woods.I love my rifles also.I have two that are very accurate and enjoy shooting at targets and game. You can shoot a 22 all day long and not spend 20 dollars. If you shoot a high powered rifle or center fire pistol you can spend 20 bucks on one box of ammo.
