Take him - only then will you know for sure. But be prepared for him to lose interest and want to leave half way through! My son watched Shrek all the way through at the cinema at around the same age, but after that any film I took him too he got bored and played up and wanted to leave. I would particularly recommend bringing him on your own without any of his little friends!!!

I'd say it all depends on the child and the people watching the movie as well as what sort of movie it is.
I've known people who were severely annoyed with having a child in the theater at all, no matter how good they were, just because they were there. Some people go as far as to complain. Especially if it's a movie that they don't think child should see.
But, in the grand scheme of things, it's your child and your money that's being paid to watch the movie. Even though Shrek is popular for all ages it's obvious that, since it's an animated film with colorful and funny characters, kids are going to want to watch it. If your child is one that would behave and listen to you if you were to, say, tell him to quiet down a little if he got too excited then I say go for it! Take him to see it and enjoy it to the fullest.
If anyone complains just because he's there then that's no sweat off your back. As long as you two have fun that's all that matters.

If he sits through the first couple movies alright, he should be okay. I would suggest going to a matinee, either during the work week if you are a stay-at-home mom, or an early showing on a Saturday. Typically, with kiddie movies (and this is, even though adults like them, too), for those showtimes, the great majority of the audience is made up of small children and parents with small children. They're a lot more likely to be understanding if your son loudly asks questions through the movie, because their kids are doing the same thing.
I wouldn't take him to a showing later than 5 o'clock, though, because in later showtimes, it's mostly older children and adults, and they're less likely to be forgiving if your child disrupts the movie.

Of course you could take him it's fun going to kids movies because you here all the kids laughing loud like yours and talking. So you don't feel there bothering any one.Mine ends up taking a nap towards the end(he's three). So I watch the last 20 mins. by myself.Oh and at the beginning of the movie they even clap. It's cute!

I went as a fetus and totally loved it. My mom was concerned with some of the language i would hear as a zygote so whe waited til she knew i could handle it. I've been going ever since, and it is easier now that i can walk and breathe on my own.
