A navy is the branch of a country's military forces principally designated for naval warfare and amphibious warfare (marines) namely lake or ocean borne combat operations and related functions. It includes operations conducted by surface ships, amphibious ships, submarines, and seaborne aviation, as well as ancillary support, communications, training, and other fields; recent developments have included space related operations. The strategic offensive role of a Navy is projection of force into areas beyond a country's shores (for example, to protect sea-lanes, ferry troops, or attack other navies, ports, or shore installations). The strategic defensive purpose of a Navy is to frustrate sea-borne projection-of-force by enemies. The strategic task of the navy also may incorporate nuclear deterrence by use of nuclear missiles.

A countries Navy gives that country an ability to control areas otherwise uncontrolable, basically. Since military campaigns began Navies have been a crucial element in logistics and an ability to control supplies or other resources. Navies are designed to take it to the enemy as an aggressive force, and in today's modern world nothing has that capability more than the Nimitz Class nuclear powered carrier and group. In many cases from history from Cleopatra to World War 2 Naval warfare has determined the outcome of war. In the modern age with nuclear and rocket technology warfare has been redefined, but in conventional war Navies still have an important role in it's mission, to control water ways and to bring the fight to the enemies soil.

Have you ever seen an aircraft carrier? Global, continuous, force projection from mobile weapons platforms thats what the Navy does. The Air Force has missle silos and air fields and the Navy has missle silos and air fields that can move to any place in the world.

the better question is what doesnt the navy do? there is more water than land on planet earth..provide air support/communications/transport troops & supplys/medical evac and treatment/facilitate landings/provide a prescence anywhere via aircraft/vessel deployment...if you think we arent on the ground, have you ever heard of the 'fighting' seabees or beachmasters?

The duties of a country's Navy are two different sides of the same coin: one, keep your country's sea lanes open for your shipping (especially supplies for your other military branches) and deny or at least hamper your enemy's access to sea lanes and thus make it difficult or impossible for him to supply HIS other forces.

The US navy's first priority is "to keep sea lanes open" "power projection". we deny the enemy the use of his sea lanes and control of his littoral regions google littoral warfare. with out control of your sea lanes and ports a country even a landlocked country will be totally shut off of arms food trade and commerce and will soon succumb to these short comings and will be rendered ineffective to carry out sustained combat operations, his troops and people will starve, their economy will collapse, cannot sustain industry for war hardware etc etc etc... we establish naval blockades (Cuba in 1963) they conduct VBSS Vessel Boarding Search and Seizure(Brits who were recently captured by Iran) of illegal commerce coming out of Iraq... conduct LEO Law Enforcement Ops in South America intercepting drug smugglers... provide port security here at home and abroad... provide first strike capabilities with Tomahawk land attack missiles from destroyers and cruiser... hunt subs... clear underwater sea mines from mined channels... plant mines... provide a unit of spec warfare in the SEALS...ordinance disposal... air warfare from carriers and cruisers...amphibous war fare capabilities from LST and LSD class ships and thats just off the top of my head
