God is not the form of human being that it stops talking to us. The abode of God is like a radio station. Thoughts are always getting transmitted throughout the Cosmos. The brain of every human being is like a transmitting and a receiving station. What to catch or not to catch is the sole prerogative of every human being. Thousands of thoughts pass by every second... what to invoke or not to invoke is purely dependent upon us human beings.
In the initial stages of life, Around 5000 years ago when even Lord Krishna, Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or prophet Mohammed had not yet arrived on the scene... how did human beings conduct life. All was dependent upon Dharma. Every human being conducted self based on Dharma. No religion existed in those times.
It is during the time of Vedas that the content of Sacred Scriptures was invoked by highly intellectual beings of that time. The invocation of Wisdom is done through the medium of Shruti... the universal medium of communication. Every human being on the spiritual path while nearing enlightenment learns this technique of Shruti.
A normal human being can never invoke the Wisdom as one desires. Thousands of thoughts pass by... yet, we are not able to control them! If we desire stepping into the domain of Shruti... we need to travel the spiritual path... the journey that culminates in one reaching the level of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed.
Vedas... the words of God were the first sacred documents that were invoked by human beings on Mother Earth. These Hindu revelations still remain intact. These voluminous documents which even scholars were unable to fathom... were reduced to a single masterpiece... the most revered Bhagavad Gita... the doctrine given to mankind by Lord Krishna.
In the present materialistic trend human beings have lost the capability to invoke the power of Shruti. It is not that God Almighty has stopped communicating. The messages from the abode of God are ever flowing. It is only enlightened masters of the present era who can invoke them freely. In the last about 150 years only two persons gained enlightenment amongst 6500 million people. They were Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana.
Both these enlightened souls never referred written literature. They invoked all the Wisdom directly from the kingdom of God. More on Revelations - http://www.godrealized.org/hindu/hindu_revelations.html

God never stopped talking to us through direct revelation. We stopped listening. Humanity is about to figure this out collectively. I experience direct revelation all the time and so do 1000s of other people that I know. I am not a Mormon, but through direct revelation I learned that one of the great contributions that the Prophet Joseph Smith made to the progression of human thought was the concept of God as a revealing God that does answer through revelation and pours forth signs and miracles upon those who are faithful. Humanity is moving back in this direction.

It's my guess that we distanced ourselves from Him and now we had to go fully on faith instead of by sensual feeling. As for the people being more holy, well, this world seems to have spiraled into more and more decadence as the centuries have passed. This world has become more about pleasures and sin than about God. I haven't the faintest idea who the last person God spoke to directly could have been. The Bible only chronicles so much. I wish God did still speak to us through direct revelation. Now I must really listen to my heart and delve into His word if I want to "hear" what He's saying.

Who says He did? His word is always true and His Spirit is there to lead and guide. In Noah's day only a handful of people were holy. He is still talking and we should be still and know He is God. It's a fallen world and we will have sin and lots of it right up until the time He returns.

Not only is God omniscient (there is nothing He doesn't know), He is also omnipresent, which means He is not bound by time which further means He now exists today back to the time when He created Adam and Eve as He does today and as He does a million years into the future. So, He was just as much present and aware of you when you were conceived as He is every one born since He created Adam & Eve. Pretty awesome God, I would say. The concept of God not being bound by time is mindboggling. He exists right now at this very moment as much in eternity past as He does eternity future.

God spoke last to Israel through Malachi, the prophet. He foretold of a messenger, the Messiah who was to come. Then, there were four hundred years of silence before John the Baptist. People were not more holy. They just didn't have an authoritative Scripture to refer to.

Wow. So many places to go with this answer. When man fell into sin, a wall was built between man and God. This barrier fell upon Christ's death. Since then we have the ability to have direct conversation with God. through His word, prayer, prophetic words, dreams, visions, etc we can get direct wisdom from God.

Good question...
I don't believe people in general were more holy 1000s of years ago...although they didn't have nearly the amount of temptation that we have today.
I believe that God stopped direct conversation once we had the Bible. The Bible is the word of God and still speaks to us.

point to ponder for people who think God has lost connection with us, the mankind.
now to answer your question, God still talks to his people in this day and age, the way he talked 'thousands of years ago'.
there is never a last person. this is an ongoing phenominon.
