Wondering about neck hyperextension, possible cervical injury, perhaps skin pulling under the chin which caused the pain and swelling. Neck hurt worse than the 10 inch abdominal incision. No gas was used, by the way - open surgery. Neck was 2 to 3 times normal size day after surgery. Told they had trouble intubating me but no other explanation and they are reluctant to answer my questions. Expected throat to be sore from tube, not a problem. But I'd like to know what caused the neck pain and swelling. Any thoughts?

well neck extension can be a cause of the pain, that typically would be expected from a surgery lasting over long hours. Swelling in the neck could be from infilteration of an IV line "if" one was attempted in the neck area, for example intra jugular or subclavian approach. Typically these lines DO NOT infilterate. Lymphatics from the stomach area eventually drain into the system through some of the neck glands. Post operative inflammation in the abdominal region can technically be one of the reasons for neck swelling. Sometimes not every question to a doctor has an answer, its not always the case that they are reluctant, let me know if I can explain something else, good luck with your recovery

Unfortunately nausea is a common side effect of many medications. If you are throwing up so much see if your dr. can put you on an antiemetic which will help relieve or control the nausea and vomiting if you are in alot of pain and need to continue the pain medication. You can also try taking your medication with meals which may help minimize the GI side effects. You definitely have to address the issue of the side effects with the pain meds and alternatives with your doctor because it is important for you to be painless to promote healing. Hope you feel better!
