Thnks Acid _Zebra for the question. It made me think.

It is entirely too self righteous to assume that this indicates an old soul and this doesn't. We are all different. So, again, assuming you believe in the soul, would early man have had a soul? I think; of course. Anything that breathes has a soul. In other words, I have no doubt that my cat has a soul.

In Buddhism the idea is to acheive enlightenment. Right? Well, how do you know if you are progressing or stagnant? Is there any way to know while you are still here on this side?

All animals have souls (even us lowly human beasts who kill, rape, steal from, declare war on and torment others of our own kind). Personally, I see people as simply animals who learned to communicate rather well, and, having that talent, we have gradually progressed exponentially in ways that make us appear more evolved and intelligent than we actually are.

Imo the non-corporeal and eternal soul may have fused with the physical when the mating process began — after newly formed Earth creatures determined that asexual reproduction wasn't much fun. That's more or less a variation on Edgar Cayce's idea that angels bred with animals, trapped divine souls inside terminal flesh and produced people.

I firmly believe ancient men had eternal souls.

If we exist, we are progressing. Although it may seem we are in a state of stagnation sometimes, I believe it's impossible to be alive without learning *something*, without progressing toward enlightenment.

Let me clarify that I have no religious affiliation.

I believe every living person and animal has a soul. That is what makes it, him, or her unique. Otherwise everyone would act the same all the time.

As far as acheiving enlightenment, or entry to heaven, or whatever your beliefs are, I believe there is no set guideline that one must follow. You feel it in your gut, or your concious. When you do something nice for someone, you feel happy and contented. When you do something bad, you feel a sense of guilt or remorse (most people do, anyway). I'm sure homo sapiens were no different. Small children know the difference between whats right and whats wrong, its an innate sense that the majority of us are born with.

To acid zebra- I think of a soul more as a person or animals concious, not something that lives on after death. It's inherent. It's what makes one refrain from killing another person.

My thoughts for now lean towards an 'evolved' soul. If the type of homo sapiens we have today evolved from something else, I'm not sure. I think once the human brain started involving decision making according to acquired knowledge and emotions, became involved with all the functions needed for just the body to react to a given situation, when all that was combined with the energy necessary, souls were created. As time goes by and more knowledge is acquired, they become more developed. Of course, re-incarnation would be involved so the 'soul' could acquire more knowledge.
Is there any way to know? I guess that depends on who you are.

I think you need to read more about what a soul is. The question of the reality of the soul and its distinction from the body is among the most important problems of philosophy, for with it is bound up the doctrine of a future life. The soul may be defined as the ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies are animated.

The term "mind" usually denotes this principle as the subject of our conscious states, while "soul" denotes the source of our vegetative activities as well. That our vital activities proceed from a principle capable of subsisting in itself, is the thesis of the substantiality of the soul: that this principle is not itself composite, extended, corporeal, or essentially and intrinsically dependent on the body, is the doctrine of spirituality.

If souls were real every living thing should possess one. Or would it just be animal matter? (and why?) Plants? Does a planet have a soul? Where do souls come from? Where do they go? At what point in the life cycle of a being do they 'enter the vessel' as it were?

yes, you're right about Buddhism..achieving enlightenment means getting rid of all worldly desires and vanities...now many people think that just because they don't have "extremes" such as alcoholism, attachment to a luxurious lifestyle etc that they have got rid of all worldly desires..but this is not so..every little thing counts as a worldy desire..

how you know whether you're progressing or stagnant is in 2 ways

(1)in relation to others:for e.g. i live a very moderate and moral life so obviously i have progressed more than an alcoholic

(2)you would feel it yourself just like when you study science, the more you read about it the more you realise that you're gaining knowledge...

oh and yes,in Buddhism also all living things possess a similar right to life.our very FIRS precept is
"i shall refrain from taking away the life of another" (this includes humans and ALL other animals from ant to fly to snake to...etc)
