Religion will just evolve like it always has.
Get ready for the End of the Universe when the Cosmic Christ and all his Borg Angles arrive in the Fourth Ascension to defete Xenu and the One Eyed Space Chickens.

Right now the "god" that's being defended is a "god of the gaps." As the gaps continue to shrink there is becoming less and less space to put god. So far, for everything we've thought too complex to happen naturally (planets moving around the sun, life's complexity, etc.) we've uncovered a natural explanation. There are fewer and fewer things we don't understand, and the space that a god can fill is rapidly dwindling.
Do I think science will make religion obsolete? Maybe. Christian apologists will always exist and they will likely always distort truth.... the majority of Americans can't identify the correct definition of evolution if given a list, and many of them buy into the gross distortions perpetuated by christian apologists. Ignorance is spread at an alarming rate. So while we gain incredible new insights there are people distorting the reality and feeding it to the masses to reassure their stupid beliefs.
I certainly hope religion will become obsolete, but I don't see it happening for a long time.

Of course not. Religious people will always find a way to dispute facts that prove their religious beliefs nonsense. Or these people will just turn a blind eye. That's what they currently do.
For example, there are a lot of people out there that believe in the whole Noah's Ark thing even though we know the problems with trying to continue a species with just a single female and male. They just completely ignore this fact. It's amazing what people will block out just so they don't have to admit their cult's beliefs are nothing but nonsense.

Recent additions to the religious mix like LDS and Scientology betray the evolving nature of religious belief. I wonder what religions will spring up when humans spend a lot of time in space.

Eventually, yes. Religion will be practiced for fun and tradition rather than literal beliefs... kinda like santa claus and the easter bunny.

What one can't explain the other can. They will cancel each other out. The world will be balanced again. We need both.
