The Irish say Come one, come all to St. Pats days. The Mexican say Come one, Come all to Cinco De Mayo. BUT,
In New York and in and around Puerto Rican communities - Puerto Ricans are getting the word out that white people, black people, Mexican, anyone that is not a truly Puerto Rican or a generation removed - YOU ARE NOT WELCOME at the Puerto Rican Day parade.. I was saddened when I heard this. I like Puerto Rican people, they are fun.. And, as a white New Yorker, I was hoping to go this year and drink a little Bacardi with the Ricans! Looks, like thats another thing white people can't belong too..

I am "white" but have a tiny european hispanic ancestry (I am mostly anglo-european) and I go to the parade once in a while, its got great music and energy. You are wrong however, in saying the Irish welcome all, they don't. I am also part Irish and would never go to the St. Patty's day parade because it is filled with drunk partiers who trash my neighborhood and its bigotted which is wrong for any parade in New York City. Sure both cultures get rowdy celebrating their heritage but the Irish are nasty about it and don't let gays and lesbians march and they dissed the NYFD, both are not cool things to do in NYC. The Puerto Rican day parade welcomes any and all, if people don't want to go that's their problem but it is a great experience.

Hi. My family is from Puerto Rico but I was born in nyc. I've never personally been to the Puerto Rican day parade because of its negitive vibe. Which is sad because I would love to go and enjoy the wonderful music and see all the Latin Stars. But growing up, the females in my neighborhood would find the skankiest outfits to wear and the males viewed the parade as the ultimate hookup event. It wasnt my style then and it's not my style now (26 yo). I know that not everone views the parade the same way. People go to celebrate their heritage & culture which, is a beautiful and wonderful thing.
That being said, I've never heard of anyone excluding any race from the parade. I dont see why anyone couldnt go? Get a flag and participate. I'm sure you have a great time.

There are some white Puerto Ricans and Black Puerto Ricans too, you know. One of my friends is Puerto Rican and white, you would never guess by looking at him. However, he wouldn't go the the PR Day Parade.

But there is no prohibition against white people going. But a lot of people in the know get out of town that day, there have been problems with drunk people attacking women etc. it can get pretty rowdy -- the hotter the day the worse it is.

Without meaning to sound racist, most people don't seem to want to have anything to do with it. I've never heard that non-Puerto Ricans weren't welcome it's just that the parade has a bad reputation now and a lot of people want to stay away from it.
