I want to buy one of those "home theater in a box" sets, i.e., 4 satelite speakers, center speaker, receiver, and subwoofer in the $300 range. Anybody have any input as to which the best one is in terms of sound quality?

Onkyo HT-S590S
Currently on sale at Circuit City for 260.00 but I would shop around. I have one of these and it sounds great. It is not HDMI compatible though. So if you are looking to switch HDMI sources through the receiver you will have to spend more than $300.

The cheapo home theater in a box are all manufactured by either a Taiwan or Chinese manufacturer. They all use the same design/vendor for the speaker. If you examine closely, it's nothing more than a glorified cheap PC speaker made with paper cones. I have a Zenith setup it was about $250 when I bought it, came with DVD player too. I'm not too thrilled but I'm using it as a PC gaming rig. It does the job.

None. Save your money and get the real thing. There is no point on spending $300 on something that will sound worse than your TV's own cheap speakers.

At the extreme low end that you have determined to set yourself for disapointment. Go to a walmart and pick the shiniest one with the coolest lights. There is no difference from one to another at that price range.
