I would look at the BMW X3, Lexus RX350 or the VW Touareg they are all stylish and have decent room. they are capable of light duty towing with there V6 engines. If towing is a priority i would go with the BMW or VW the Lexus has a low towing capacity. the BMW get the best gas mileage in combination with the second best towing and has decent performance and will be more fun to drive than most other suv's if you need to tow more than 4400lbs go with the Touareg which will tow 7700lbs. the lexus will be the most reliable but is only second best in gas mileage and will only tow 3500lbs but has the most cargo room. I would say overall the BMW fits your description the best with 26mpg highway and decent towing plus the most fun to drive and sportiest of the group.

You're not going to get performance, towing, and economy in the same vehicle. If you can do without the towing, you should look at a CR-V. If you gotta tow, you will need AT LEAST a six cylinder, for a very small trailer. If you are towing a boat, camper, or another car, you will need a V8.

Do you really need towing capability?

With gas at record highs, or very close to it, I'd recommend skipping the whole SUV thing all together. Think mid-size sedan, or even hybrid.

You wouldn't believe how many Behemoth SUVs I see out here, and gas it at $3.25 a gallon. How do people afford these $75 fill ups every week?

The crux here is towing. If you're talking about a jet ski or something like that, I would go with the Honda CR-V or Ford Escape.

The next step up would be the Toyota Highlander.
