epidural steroid injections have become an integral part of non-surgical management of low back pain.
An epidural injection is typically used to alleviate chronic low back and/or leg pain. While the effects of the injection tend to be temporary - providing relief from pain for one week up to one year - an epidural can be very beneficial for patients during an episode of severe back pain. Importantly, it can provide sufficient pain relief to allow the patient to progress with their rehabilitation program.
I've enclosed a link where you can read more about this procedure.

Epidural anesthesia is an injection of drugs into the space surrounding the spine. It is typically used during childbirth or surgery. Sometimes it is used for back pain.
Combined spinal and epidural anesthesia is faster, and the injection goes directly into the spinal fluid.
For back pain a doctor injects steroid medication. This technique has been used for several decades, but recently the American Academy of Neurology determined that it has limited use in short-term pain relief and none in long-term relief.

It's given to women in labor. It causes the nerves in the lower half of the body to not respond (no pain). I haven't heard of it used for male back pain though
