I feel like such an ****** for doing that, but I know that I don't want to buy their product or service, and talking with them just to be polite is just wasting their time. They don't stop talking either, and I usually have to interrupt them mid-sentence, which makes me feel terrible. Their job must be so frustrating, but I really can't help it, and if they'd just pause between sentences and give me some time to say "No thank you", then there wouldn't be a problem, but they can tell when you want to hang up and start talking even faster. I usually give them a sentence or two (just to make sure that it isn't a call that I need to deal with), but after that, I just say "Feel free to mail me some information. Thanks.", and then hang up. How do you feel in situations like this?

I am on the federal do not call list. So, I tell them they are going to prison for calling me.

When I get a call from a telemarketer and I am in a pissy mood I will let them talk and let them think that they have a bite and have them repeat whatever they say a couple of times. and I LET my kids scream as loud as they can. I don't listen to anything they say but my family make it a game to be annoying while timing how long it takes for them to give up.
They get paid by how many mags or whatever they sell. They are prepared to hang ups.so you aren't an ******. I am also on the do not call list but there are some that call anyway.

The National Do Not Call Registry does not stop all telemarketing calls. Even if you register your number with the list a company that you have purchased goods or have done business with may call you for up to 18 months after that transaction unless they are told to stop. Not included in the registery are bill collectors who must during "reasonable" hours. And the right not to be pestered by creditors is only given to those who have filed for bankruptcy protection.

Well my bf used to work as a telemarketer ( god did he hate it) and he said he would rather have people hang up on him so either a. he did not waste his time or b. he didn't have really rude people to talk to. One thing people need to realize about the National Do Not Call list is that does NOT apply to charities.. just thought you would like to know...

British Chippie is right. I don't get many telemarketing calls because I'm on the national Do Not Call list, but if I answer the phone and hear dead air, I just hang up immediately. I do not say "hello" more than once.

I think it's rude when a stranger calls your house, starts yapping like you're best friends and acting all familiar, probably interrupting you cooking dinner or watching a good show or eating dinner. I didn't ask for you to call, I'm not waiting for you to call, if I want to buy something I'll go to the store, thank-you-very-much. I also hate getting all that junk mail, so I wouldn't tell them to send anything.

I don´t feel guilty about hanging up on them. They know what job they´re getting into and have thick skins. I just tell them that I have a call on the other line and then hang up.

It´s bad enough getting unwanted telemarketing calls at home, I used to get them at work too. One time this guy called trying to sell my company cell phones and I told him that we weren´t interested and he wouldn´t take the hint so I just had to hang up on him. He then called back on a different line and insisted on selling me a phone!

I tell them in a nice way that I am not interested. I truly am not. Even if there is a free offer involved.

I don't like strangers calling my home (unlisted number) to sell something.

I feel sorry for the telemarketer. Its a horrible job.

In our house hanging up on telemarketers is a sport. Children are taught that we purchased our phone service and we control how we use the service we pay for. If you call our phone number by mistake we are as polite as possible. If you leave your track or advertising on out front gate or windshield you are littering our environment, We consider it a form of verbal littering to have telemarketers using our phone line!

I LOVE hanging up on them, though every now and then I'll let them blab on.

For instance, someone called my parents house when I still lived there regarding a home mortgage. Not only do I not pay the mortgage, we are not interested.

I try to state that I don't own a home, but the lady kept overriding me. SO I let her.

Blah blah blah, I toned her out until it sounded as though she was wrapping up.

Then I say "I guess I would have to own a home first, eh?"

Silence.

"Next time, let the prospective customer talk, or you would not have wasted time with me on the phone" **I hang up**

The telephone used to be something that let friends stay in touch.

I do not consider it rude to hang up on telemarketers - it's like having uninvited guests barging into my home. I put them out.

I do understand they are just doing their jobs, but I figure that they need to understand that being hung up on is also part of their job.

If you really don't want to hang up on them, just set the phone down on the counter or table (with or without a "Be right back" comment), and check back in about 10 minutes. They will have hung up on you.
