I've been in the gym, working very hard for five weeks. I've also incorporated a very healthy diet. I've lost 12 pounds so far, and Im thrilled with the results. However, a trainer at the gym explained that the first 10 lbs. are easy, it becomes a true effort after that. She suggested eating protein bars or shakes after my workout, and even a metabolism boosting diet pill each day. First, is this info correct, and second, there are so many bars and pills out there, what should I take??

AS a personal trainer, I would NEVER suggest a client take a weight loss pill. ANd I don't subscribe to the fact that the first 10 are the easiest...... if you are following a sensible diet, and change your routine every 8 weeks or so, you will continue to see results.

protein bars, are, in my opinion, nothin more than glorified candy bars... there are a few good ones, but I would rather see a client eat a real meal of HEALTHY food that a bar.

protein shakes are very good post workout... amke sure the one you use is not full of sugar and other junk. Syntrax makes a great one called Nectar, which has 0 net carbs, 28 grams protein, mixes instantly with water, tastes great, ( I like the fuzzy navel), and has only 90 calories per serving. Try mixing it with 1 cup non fat plain yogurt and 1/2 cup berries for a nutritious post workout snack.

While protein bars and shakes can be a good alternative to a meal or snack you have to be very careful that you check the ingredients. Read the label. Remember that even if the bar is low in fat or low in carbs if there is a lot of sugars you will raise your Glucose Index and may end up storing fat. As for the diet pill I would be extra cautious in this area.
First is it an all natural product?
Second are there any side effects? Your trying to get healthy.
Third and most important is that if your not careful you could end up being dependent on the diet pill.
I would recommend going as natural as possible in both food and any kind of diet supplement.

Hope this answer helps,
Take care,
Lee

First of all, the best motivator is you yourself, I am currently on a diet plan and moderate excercise, which i know i can continue for the rest of my life. I noticd that the 1st week was the toughest, 2nd week i was kinda getting into the mood, 3rd week i could reallllly feel the difference. and i guess thats what keeps me going. I fit into some of my older clothes which had not seen the light of the day for sometime and feel motivated when friends tell me i look better with the weight loss now i am completley into the mode and i dont even want to eat any junk. Not that i don't treat myself to a goodie once a week! So, i suggest buy yourself a dress in a smaller size and your goal shoud be to fit into it in a months time. Don't confine yourself indoors, move out, noone cares about your few extra pounds, they have other things to worry about. Goodluck now.

The bars and shakes, maybe. But...

I know at least one person who tried metabolism-boosting pills. She went from being a strong vital woman who could walk and work all day long without breathing hard to being scarcely able to walk across her own back yard. Needless to say, I don't think the pills are such a great idea.
