You can buy a LED based flood light. Flood light will provide a light for a whole room and not a spot light like flash light. Also, LED is the most efficient light there is so battery will last probably 100x more than a regular flash light.

That is not a flash light is hard. The only thing I could figure is either an LED base lightsource or a fluorecent base light. Like one of those night lights. Why not the good old fashion and trusty candle? Even people that explore caves carry at least 1 candle along their many batteries and flashlighs.

Alternatively how about night vision gogles.?

You can also look for one of those lights that has the rechargeable batteries in it. You turn a crank on the side, charge the batteries and it runs for awhile. When it gets dim, turn the crank some more. No dead batteries to worry about!

Check stores with sporting goods or outdoor equipment for these, people use them camping too.

I know you said not flashlight but this is my personal recommendation. Energizer Weather Ready rechargeable flashlight.
Why this one? It is rechargeable, it plugs into the wall and turns on when the power goes off. It can run for 15+ hours.

Or if you want something that is powered by regular batteries ...

Well you can use those solar landscape lights that people put around their driveways. They aren't too bright but some of them last up to 10 hours, and you can just put them back outside to recharge them every day.
