Personally, if I were coming to ny, I would want to stay in the middle (midtown) of everything BUT not where the crowds are. I live off of time square, just a few blocks away. Check for the Travelers inn. It's located on 42nd street between 10th and 11th avenue. It's not in the center of everything so, you dont feel so overwhelmed but, you can easily hop on the train and get to where you want to go.

Anyone who has stayed in tourist-magnet Manhattan lately will say you're lucky to find availability on the day you want, that it can be hard to find a nice room for less than $200 and that you can easily pay $500 a night for small digs at a luxe property.
Today, there's a new entry on the luxury scene. AKA, a fast-growing extended-stay brand, opens the AKA Central Park, its third and largest property in New York City.
The 17-story former Wyndham New York has been transformed into 134 studio, one- and two-bedroom suites that start at $395 a night for a stay of less than a week, $255 nightly for month-plus stays. All suites feature stone-floored foyers, upscale kitchens with stainless-steel appliances and granite countertops, large bathrooms and sleek modern firnishings. Two penthouse suites have wrap-around terraces.
A room with kitchen near Central Park is worth checking out. Now, let's hear Hotsheeters' picks for non-pricey lodging in New York. I've stayed at the Casablanca Hotel near Times Square (small rooms, but friendly and breakfast included) and a friend of mine is headed to my late father's favorite budget perennial, the Park Central. My colleague Gene Sloan wrote about new, hip entries that won't eat your wallet.
Go shopping at Century 21, which is across the street from Ground Zero. Go to the pretheater dinner at the Four Seasons Restaurant, if you are seated by 6 PM, the whole meal from appetizer to dessert is $65. Jacket and tie required. There is a great Sunday brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel, not the same as the restaurant I just mentioned. Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is wonderful and has a delightful place for lunch. Also the Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Zoo. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry or the Circle Line Cruise around Manhattan.

You did not mention a price range. If price is not an issue (at Christmas time the hotels are very expensive), you should try the following:
The Carlyle
The Palace
The Essex House
If you want something more middle of the road:
Any of the "W" hotels
The Paramount
The Hudson
If you are willing to go out of midtown, the Soho Grande and TriBeCa Grande and Gramercy Park Hotel can sometimes be good deals.
If you are looking for something cheap, just go on Yahoo! Travel and do a search. However, you do not want to stay West of 8th Avenue or East of Park if you want to be shopping and going to shows.

The Hilton on 5th Avenue is really nice and right smack in the middle of the action - it is only a couple of blocks from Rockerfeller Center (perfect especially at Christmas) close to Times Square, lots of Restaurants, the subway is nearby, it really is perfect
Even though I live just outside NY, I actually have been staying here every December for an event I attend and it has always been an excellent experience.
However, it can get very pricey, especially in December.

all of the hotels that are mentioned are good. Whenever I fly back to NY to visit i normally stay at one of the WOOGO apartments. They are fairly inexpensive and you get (depending on what you book) everything from a studio apartment to a 3 bedroom apartment.

Depends on your price range -- midtown area is most expensive there are other choices in different areas that are better bang for the buck and it's easy to get to shopping areas and theater from them walking or by subway.
