I think I remember seeing a website once that talked about turning it into a "National Day of Action" and how those who don't believe in prayer should go out and actually do good, like volunteer or give blood or something. Does anyone know anything about that? I'd like to participate. :)

Thanks to everyone who responded helpfully! I think I'll go give blood after class today. :D

President Bush signed May 3, 2007 to be the 'National day of Prayer'.

It is for America to turn to the Highest Power, who individuals believe that is, and pray for restoration of our nation and our armed forces.

For those who don't want to Pray to God about it, they don't have to. It is an option, not a commandment.

If we pray that is what we do, we pray to God & agree together for the better of our nation.

If a nation humbles herself before God, repenting of any wicked way (terrorism, etc.), God will heal her land.

Our Humanist group is joining our atheist brothers and sisters in donating blood. http://www.atheistvolunteers.org/ The Rational Response Squad's ad campaign is a bit too pugnacious for my taste, but that doesn't make the blood drive any less excellent an idea.

I don't have a problem with the National Day of Prayer as it is currently organized, with the president issuing a proclamation and then letting private groups and private individuals take it from there. If the government were to start getting more involved with organizing events and spending taxpayers' money, then I would object. As it is, it gives all Americans an opportunity to think about religious freedom and how precious it is. And, if they choose, they can pray for the nation. The National Day of Prayer Task Force, which does much of the organizing and publicizing of events is not government funded, so I can't complain about public funds being used inappropriately. And, as Tami pointed out, no one is forced to do anything they do not want to. That's a pretty good arrangement, as I see it.

Sorry i do not imagine it truly is going to seize on. It comes between flag day on June 14, and Fathers day, the twenty first of June. in case you want yet another vacation how about October 10th "10-4 solid pal" or or March third (Pi day) 3.14. I genuinely were campaigning for decades to have at present proclaimed nationwide holidays. each body isn't genuinely inspired, about which days are holidays. as far as nationwide mans' day, lots of the folk, highly the girls human beings, will in all likelihood in basic terms bypass on doing what they continuously do.

I love the idea of giving blood, but the last time I did, my lips turned blue and my blood pressure dropped to dangerously low levels. So, that option's out.

Today will be spent like every day, schooling my 15 and 8 year old. After they go to their youth center, we'll do a beach clean-up.

Donate Blood. The RRS is sponsoring a blood drive, I suggest going that route. One pint of blood can save up to 3 lives.

National Day of Reason. I think it was Paladin who posted the site.

The only thing I've done is donate clothes and toys to the local shelter... but I did it without realizing what day it was. lol

Just because a person doesn't believe in prayer doesn't mean they do bad things. Everyone is capable of doing good and many don't need to believe in prayer to do it. I don't hate you by the way.
