As a side note: Why do you think The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints oppresses women?

I'm a woman, been a member of the Church all my life. I've NEVER felt oppressed. Oh wait, there must be someone behind me telling me to type that.

It arises from two sources:

1). Misconceptions and disinformation. Apologists do not often tell that it was banned, only that it was accepted at one time. Personally, I'd capitalize on this if I wrote an apologetics treatise, but apologists often look for a shortcut.

2). People see all the sects that broke away from the LDS that still practice it and associate it with "Mormons." You've had numerous schisms, and often people on the outside can't tell the difference.

The LDS Church does NOT practice polygamy. It hasn't done so for over 100 years.

Of course, there are some religious groups that broke off the meanstream Mormonism, after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. and who refused to accept the authority of President Brigham Young. They claim to be Mormons, and use the same Scriptures, but they are not part of the LDS Church. Those are the ones that practice polygamy along with some Menonites, and other religious groups.

The LDS Church DOES NOT oppress women. That is just propaganda against the LDS Church.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) do not practice polygamy. It was a part of the history of the Church back in the mid 1800's, but is no longer practiced. I would find it a very hard principle to practice if it were.
However, in thinking about it, in a way, it is a better practice than what currently occurs in this day and age. How many men of all faiths, beliefs, creeds, persuasions, backgrounds, etc impregnate women, then separate, find another women, impregnate her, grow tired and more on again? And again.
In my profession of social work, I see that there are many single women who have multiple children all from different men. And many men, you have had children of many different women. They separate and the women is left to deal with the children. In a way, if a polygamous man continues to support his wives and children, it is better off situation than all of the single parent women who are left to fend for themselves with multiple children by different men.

we don't practice polygamy anymore. That was done away with over 100 years. As a woman I do not feel oppressed. I have a Master's degree and am working on PhD. right now. I also work full time. I have two small children who I am also taking care of. Yes there are guidelines that as members we follow but not to the point that we are told we cannot do something.

Joseph Smith was NOT a polygamist, and LDS/Mormon members DO NOT practice, support or live polygamy. They think it is disgusting, immoral and WRONG. It is against the law and against the church completely. Only ignorant listen-to-everybody-else-but-the-direct-... people believe that OLD OLD OLD tale. Come on people, wake up! (I live in Utah, have a HUGE family, none of which practices, and yes I do know polygamists, but they HATE mormon's/LDS members and DO NOT believe as the LDS do).

No, the church would excommunicate anyone who was doing that. The people who practice polygamny broke off from the church years ago and formed their own religion. I have never felt opressed in anyway. They dont tell us what to do. I have a college education and a good career. I chose to reduce my hours when I had my daughter, but that was my doing.

Most men practice "polygamy" in a way. They just don't marry them. It's called cheating.

I guess men just want their cake and eat it to. I don't understand why they have those values. To me it's totally disrespectful towards women. God said marriage is between a man and woman not man and women. Guess they'll learn that one day.
