It serves both functions. Depending on the user, he or she may simply bash, try to gain an understanding of others, or try to get others to understand opposing viewpoints. Also, it depends upon your own tolerance level. If you are easily offended, I would suggest leaving, but if you can handle it, this place can be very amusing.

Anonymity and the Internet coupled together will always have problems.

To find understanding and compassionate atmospheres, you will most likely have to go to blogging websites or restricted forums where trolls are scrutinized.
YA does not require anyone to be anything to answer. People can be idiots and experts at the same time.

I have email correspondances with several friends on here. Some of them are christians, and some are not atheist.
I don't know that understanding can flourish "on here" but you can tell who the reasonable people are and have conversations with them.
