I have fair to medium skin and tan well usually. I have been on the sun beds for:
1st time - 4 minutes
2nd time - 4 minutes

Should I now up my time on them - or is there any other way of getting browner quicker - ie accelerator etc?

And how long (minutes wise) should it take to get a nice brown colour..?

Yes there are creams you can buy to get brown quicker if you ask in your shop. I think you should stay with 4 minutes for the first 5 times. Then move to 6 minutes and then to 8, I don't think you need to ever go over 10 minutes in 1 session. If you buy a course its cheaper and will take a whole course of about and hour and a half to get really good results xx

I used to go to tanning beds before being diagnosed with two kinds of cancer (one is skin). I'm not going to preach to you but will give you two answers:

1) If you really want the tanning bed effect, a safe bet is to up your minutes by 2 every second time you're there. Once you hit 10 you should be able to jump to 13, but if your skin feels sensitive where it's touching the bed, it's burning and get out right away.

2) In search of a tan and no more cancer I have tried most of the sunless tanners on the market and can tell you some of them look like crap, but the one I have been using for a while now is Neutrogena's Endless Summer. It comes in a 'face' and a 'body' kind and you can get the medium or dark tone. It works so well (not streaky, looks natural, etc) that in my last photo shoot the photographer didn't even know it was a fake tan! Technology (yes, even tanners) has come a long way, just be careful when you apply it and don't rush.

i suggest moving up your time by a min or 2 every time, or every other time u go, til u reach the max time in the bed (usually 20 min if it`s a regular lay-down bed)...as long as u are not getting too red!!! as for lotion, u could try an accelerator, which helps bring your skin`s melanin to the surface, allowing u to tan more quickly...or maybe a bronzer, which contains bronzing agents that give u immediate color while you`re waiting for your own natural tan to develop...or maybe an accelerator & bronzer combo lotion, that will give u the benefits of both...there are some good lotions put out by swedish tan, pro tan & fiesta sun...u can consult with the tanning salon attendant for explanations on the best products your particular salon carries for your personal tanning goals...i imagine it will probably take u at least 3-4 weeks to develop a good color, depending on how frequently u go...probably 3-4 days a week would be sufficient if u just want a nice brown color & don`t really want to get super dark...happy tanning!!!

I would move my time up if I were you.... always use a lotion of some sort because I hear dry skin does not tan. Nicely moistened skin tans more effectively. I am not sure where you live but if you have MySpace you can search for a place called Island Tan in Gulf Shores, AL. They have some very useful info on taning on their page. Good Luck!

if you must go to a tanning bed the best advice I can give is to do what the store manager recommends. Not the girl behind the counter (which is usually just a teenager). Also I once used a lotion that was a "Bronzer" it kept me from burning and really turned my fair skin brown....

but.... i know you probably already know this but tanning beds lead to an increased risk of skin cancer and skin cancer believe it or not leads to ALOT more deaths of young otherwise healthy people than you probably realize.

Please don't use tanning beds! I am an esthetician (skin care therapist) and the UVA rays given off by tanning beds are aging rays. They will age your skin, dry it out and break down the collagen and elastin in your skin that keeps it firm. Also, these rays penetrate deeper into the epidermis than UVB rays and can contribute to skin cancer as well as premature aging. Your best bet is to get the tan towels off of home shopping network, they work really well and don't streak, and then put sunscreen all over your body and don't be shy with it, reapply every two hours and have beautiful, healthy skin until you are old, old, old....

you should keep creeping up your minutes by 3 as long as your not seeing any red tinkt to your skin , and tanning with oils is always a good idea then you dont get dried out and your tan apears more even

The general recommended starting time is 6 minutes depending on hte bed and the skin type but from wat you have said i would up the time to around 8-9 mins and use a good cream i recommend autralian gold products as it is the best selling range in my salon. Personally i used puppy love as it has the effect of a tingle cream (slight redness) without the tingly itchy sensation .... check out ebay for some great creams at a good price x

Just follow the instructions or ask the tanning salon staff for advice. I wouldn't recommend exceeding the recommended time- most of the sunbed addicts I know have aged prematurely and have crinkly skin and liver spots! Then again I am really pale and have just learned to love it
