After watching a video on yahoo I started wondering, how could someone who is in a life threatening stituation get where they are going if they are stoped by the police? If you are in a hurry to a burning home, or rushing off to meet you father at the hospital for a heart attack, how do you deal with an officer who pulled you over? Obviously he isn't going to believe you. He may even get more annoied at the fact that your telling him such an "outlandish" story. What would you do?

It just seems to me that too much power has been taken out of the people's hands and given to a hired hand by an elected official. Would you be willing to sacrafice freedom for safety?

I was expecting something on Yahoo after seeing the media report myself.

Personally, being in such close proximity to the hospital as the violator I would have followed the violator to the hospital to verify the situation.

This is a problem that starts when officers are given similar excuses in attempts to sway an officer from doing his duty.

It's like the violator who uses the "I have to use the bathroom" excuse yet they've passed numerous places to stop prior to being stopped.

In this particular incident, the violator was not the one in medical distress it was a family member. The circumstances raise two issues to include 1) If you are driving dangerously to the hospital, what would happen if you compounded the problem by becoming involved in an accident yourself; 2) Is your presence detrimental to the outcome of the already on-going medical assistance being given.

The young lady was emotionally distressed and rightfully so! Her failing to comprehend the events going on with the police compounded the issue when she departed the scene DURING the traffic stop. When the police see this...it's NORMALLY due to a violator trying to get away from the police for their involvement in illegal activities.

This was an unfortunate situation where the officer COULD have used a bit better judgment and understanding. Maybe the solution to the problem would be less dishonesty from SOME drivers when confronted by police!

As for your comment about sacrificing freedom for safety...come on...I think you're saying that to bolster your initial comment. Wasn't necessary! I want (as everybody else) the freedom to walk or drive the streets in safety!

Just my humble opinion!

Best wishes.

If it's truly life-threatening, you can call the dispatch from your cell phone and inform them so they can tell the officer. You can usually call 911. Tell the dispatcher that an officer is trying to pull you over, and you are not trying to evade the officer, but you are in route to your home that is on fire (or your wife is in the middle of having birth, or whatever), and the officer can follow you, but you cannot pull over. The officer will be informed via radio, and you can stay on line with the dispatch until you have arrived at your location.

Be honest with the officer and tell them why you are in such a hurry, if it's an emergency like a fire or something, they may already know about it. Plus, I know many who will call the hospital or whoever to verify your story.

First thing you must do when you know a law enforcement officer has pulled you over is to RELAX!

Don't in any way, shape or form become agitated or alarmed.

And keep your hands plainly in sight. They don't like it if they think you're reaching for any kind of weapon.

The Supreme Court has given law enforcement great latitude to do things that could hurt you the rest of your life with no legal recourse.

Cooperate within reason or they will do whatever they want. Just keep what happened to Rodney King in mind. We can't all just get along when it comes to police violence.

You cannot ignore the rules on the road because someone's in the hospital etc. as you may be endangering the lives of other people.

The next time you get stopped by the police, lean out the window and yell, "Fill it with unleaded and check the oil!"
