Hopefully you haven't told them exactly what you want and where you want it yet. What I would do is tell them you want to pierce your tongue and one eyebrow and possibly get branded around your arm and tell them you have even considered one of those earrings that stretch out your ear so that you have a giant hole in the lobe. I'd even get some photos of the ideas along with some photos of some outrageous tattoos. While presenting all this you should have a picture of exactly what you really want as far as a tattoo.

After seeing all that...well they will be glad that you only want a tattoo. Devious...yes...but parents sometimes need to see that in the whole scheme of things a tattoo should be the least of their worries.

Question 1. How old are you? If your under 18, wait. You might change your mind about which tattoo and where.

Don't get a tattoo in an obvious place. Choose something that you would be able to cover up with everyday clothes. If you want a professional career, a suit will cover most tattoos.

When you do get a tattoo, get one that means something to you. Don't get a skull because it seems cool and everyone else has a skull. Get something that you can look at and be able to give a reason for, other than "It seemed like a good idea at the time". AND NO NAMES!!!

As for your parents. They feel the way they feel. You probably can't change their minds. Not their fault, and not yours either. If you're over 18, you can do it legally. If you get a tattoo that means something, maybe they will accept it. Life goes on.

Depends on how old you are. 18 or older? Then try and explain exactly why you want it and how much it means to you. Legally, you can get it without their consent, though I my parents supported mine, and I'd recommened not getting in huge fights over this. Your throat will hurt tommorrow morning and it won't prove you're mature. Look at it from their piont of view, You are their 'child' and they love you and want to make sure you want this for the rest of your life. Most likely they already think you're stunning the way you are, and you don't need ink. I'd say explain that you beleive it would do something for YOU and it symbolises something very special. Under 18? Then you have to have your parents full support! Rememeber! They are still paying for your food and other necessitites since you are underage and live with them, and they deserve respect for raising you. Don't throw a fit if they say 'no' the first time. Design your tattoo exactly how you want it, find a sterile parlor to get it done at, and make sure you explain how much this design means to you. Present them with this info and maybe you'll get a 'we'll think about it' or okay, fine...' Present good evidence as to what the tattoo would mean to you and go about it in a respectful manner; don't jump up and down, saying: 'But Mamma, I WANT IT!" If you get what you desire that way, it'll only bring guilt on your part.

i'm sorry that your parents are being difficult about this issue. the first thing you need to do is get some facts together and sit down with them to have a rational conversation with them. i know a lawyer and she has a tattoo so to say that it's not professional is just false. i also work at a hospital and there are doctors with tattoos. granted MOST business professionals such as the before mentioned don't have visible tattoos they are all easily hidden from public view when at work and that is definitely adviseable. mostly just know your stuff about tattoos and help them to realize that tattoos are more acceptable these days and that not everyone with a tattoo is a criminal, or a delinquent or a hoodlum, uneducated or trashy. we are normal people with normal jobs and normal families.

I am a mother I do not exactly like the fact that my child wants a tattoo, but i have one myself. My parents were the same,so I did not get one until I in was in my twenties. I do not know your age, but I will say if you are over the age of 18 then you can/do have the right to get one. All though your parents will still be upset at first and in alittle shock get one that you think they will not be so hurtful about. I know that my daughter will probably/eventually get one herself, so the only thing I can do is make her wait until she is 18 and I can not tell her NO anymore.

What you should do is persuade them that with a tattoo on your back or top of the arm or anywhere that isnt shown in the business office would still be professional since no one would know... that would probably work and depending on if your still in high school tell them that your grades are good and you feel as though you should get a reward for them and if you are out of high school then they have no say in whether you can get a tattoo

Don't listen to that garbage about not being able to get a professional job with tattoos.
I have full sleeve tattoos on my arms and I work as a professional engineer in an office setting. Most people just think they are cool and take no offense to them.

Just do it, your parents get mad for 2 seconds, then they realize the tattoos are never coming off and they accept it.

Are you sure you really want this tattoo? They are permanent. I have 4 tats, my parents did not approve of the first (I was 17). They have learned to accept them. They will love you no matter what. Make sure that what you get is something you wont regret 20 years down the road.

Are you over 18? If not, wait until you are. You've got the rest of your life to get inked. And tell the parents there are areas of your body that people don't see if you're a lawyer or journalist.

Defend it by explaining why you want it. If you don't have something particular you want, than maybe you should think about that for awhile before you go out and mark your body. But if you DO know what you want, and it has significance, which every tattoo should, than explain the importance of it. My husband and I got each others names and my step sister got a frog to symbolize the loss of her mother because her mom loved frogs. Don't just get one to have one, because if you want an accessory you can get a piece of jewelry or sunglasses- but if you want something symbolic than vocalize it!
