I used to get ingrown nails alot. Then I figured out that you can cut the corner of the nail thats ingrown and pull it out. Then push on the end a little and if there is still the same amount of pain you didn't get all of it out. If you did get it out cut a small V in the center of the toe nail at the end, this will make it grow back toward the center. If you do not do this the nail will continue to become ingrown each time it grows out. After you have solved this problem be sure and cut her nails straight across each time in the future! Also, as young as she is you need to soak her foot first, and after in epsom salt to soften it first then to prevent infection after. Also pour peroxide on it and keep it clean until it heals.

First, soak the foot in a bucket or a tub with 1/4 full of warm water and then put about 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide into it. Soak for about 15 minutes, dry the foot and then stick a piece of cotton under the nail around the part where it is ingrown. After a few days if it does not improve, you will need to see a doctor before it gets serious.

I get ingrown toenails all the time, and I find that it helps to sort of slide a nail file or manicure stick under the nail and sort of pry the edge of the ingrown toenail up so it is free from the skin (I know, OUCH, but it does work.) Once the edge has been pried up, clip it at an angle so it can grow out normally. This will hurt your daughter a lot less if you soak her foot first.

My daughter had the same problem and the doctor told me to soak her feet in the tub for about 15 minutes until the nail softens. Then when they get out lift the edge of the nail a little and stick some cotton underneath. This'll help the nail grow straighter so you can cut it. Good luck.

Toenails in stage 1 can be treated with warm soaks, a cutout shoe, and by elevating the nail with a cotton swab. Symptoms improve after a couple of days, but may not resolve for 2 to 3 weeks. Toenails in stage 2 can be treated with warm soaks and oral antibiotics. Closed-toed shoes and hosiery should not be worn for at least 1 week. If the toenail is especially painful, a portion of the toenail may need to be removed... So you will have to take her to a Doctor.

If it's not very severe, you can get an ingrown nail file. Check at your drugstore, or at Sally Beauty Supply (I know they have them.) There are directions on the package, but basically, it's a one direction file that gets the stuck part off.
If the area looks like it may be infected (red, swollen, hot, etc.) don't try to do this, go ahead and see her pediatrician.

Please, allow the doctor to do it. My mother was born in 1904. I had ingrown toenails. My mother used a razorblade and cut out the nails. Trust me, this was very, very painful. It was, also, VERY dangerous. It is a wonder that I didn't develop really bad infections and more.
