During a physical the doctor said he was going to check my liver and he hit on my side (not hard at all). He said it shouldn't hurt and I told him it didn't because I couldn't fail the physical (I'm in the Marine Corps). What was he checking for? Should I see a doctor?

Hopefully he did some lab work to check your liver function. If those are elevated then he'll let you know and where to go from there. Hope everything is okay!

Yellowing of the skin and eyes is called jaundice, and is an indication of hepatitis - liver inflammation. The liver filters and stores blood, secretes bile to help digestion, and does many jobs related to the use of sustances in the blood and other parts of your body. You can't live without your liver but the liver is the only organ in humans that can regenerate itself. Hopefully if he takes good care of himself, he can overcome the hepatitis and get back to a reasonably normal life. Too much alcohol can really hurt the liver, and kill, if the person can't leave it alone. It would be a hard life..
