Minimally the dog has a bladder problem. You have trained him not to soil his crate. So he whines to wake you up instead.
The fact that he is waking up needing to go outside to the bathroom 2 or 3 times per night suddently, should have clued you in to the fact that he had a medical problem.

Could have a urinary tract infection. Any time a dog has a sudden behavioral change like this it is a good idea to see your vet.
Make sure he gets plenty of exercise in the evening and is tired when he goes into the crate.
Has he been neutered yet? If not this would be a good time to do so, he may be smelling a female in heat also.

I'm not a big advocate on immediately going to the vet for every little issue! How do some of these people afford that?! Just monitor your dog for a day or two. Does he want to outside a lot during the day, too? Does he seem to be in pain? Is he drinking more water than normal? If he seems off, then call your vet. If this is strictly a night-time thing, maybe he is just bored. Make sure he gets some exercise in the evening and put him out right before you turn in. I have two older dogs who get up repeatedly during the night, but I chalk that up to their ages. Sometimes, though, they want to go out because there are cats or possums or whatever wandering around and they want to check it out! Maybe it's a similar thing for you dog? Good luck!

My black lab did this 3 nights in a row and then stopped. I don't know how long this has been going on with your lab, but if it's only been a few nights, I wouldn't worry. If it's been longer and he hasn't stopped, then maybe it's a more serious issue requiring the vet.

Yup my lab did it too! Make sure you take him out right before you go to bed and tell him go to sleep and ignore as much as u can when you don't give in he will learn. Also make sure he's getting plenty of exercise Labs require alot of exercise like swimming, fetch, or running. It also helps them to rest.

your dog is probably lonely or tired of feeling being pinned in. also, if you let your dog eat and drink throughout the day, try not to let him eat and drink after five in the evening..this should eliminate some of the bathroom outings at night. i would make sure he has plenty of chew toys and doggie bonz to keep him occupied..he may just be getting bored.

I would take him to the vet - sudden behavior changes are often due to medical problems. He could have a minor urinary tract infection or other issue.

Definately take him to the vet. He sounds like he is in pain. If he is a beloved pet i am sure you don't want that

I'd start with Melissa's advice and then follow up with LA's advice if there is no medical reason.

It is either a sign of aging, though premature considering his actual age, or lack of proper training!
