I am interested in finding great hiking around New York city? Any suggestions? I have a car and I'll be able to drive a few hours or so to get there. Thanks!

Upstate New York is a hikers dream. Lots of mountains, waterfalls and lakes. Some very nice places are Bear Mountain (about 1.5-2 hour drive from NY), the Catskills, Poconos are slightly farther being in PA. I would stick with Bear Mountain.

Lake Minnewaska is also stunning and has some wonderful hiking trails. http://www.lakeminnewaska.org/

There are even some lovely trails in Central Park.

Make sure you bring your camera. :) Also if you plan on hiking into the evening bring a sweater as it can get quite chilly up there depending on the time of year. Hope you have a lovely time!

Harriman State Park or Bear Mountain - they're both about an hour or so north.

There's also a park in the Shawngunk Mountains, around New Paltz (exit 18 off I-87 north) whose name escapes me right now, but there's miles of trails up there with great mountain views.

Palisades interstate park is right across the river. Trails start at the GW and go north.
