Art is priced on the market worth of the artist. A well known artist like Howard Barhens for instance gets$30,000 to $50,000. for an original 36x48 oil painting.
You can buy art a unknown artists work at a local art show same size for around $200.
I suggest you get the book "The mystery of making it" by Jack White. www.jackwhiteartist.com
you can down load it on line, and he gives the best explanation of how to price art work. For instance galleries usually always get more money for an oil painting than a water color.
Some artist feel they should charge more if it took them a long time to paint. The buying public doesn't care.
And the Chinese have got oil paintings that are beautiful that are jokingly refereed to as sold by the pound. These are done mostly in an assembly line sort of way, but the art work is still very good. ( I have seen reputable art galleries make up fake bios on these Chinese pieces and sign the artwork themselves)
The real secret is to sell the artist not the art. Why do you want a Ferrari over a VW bug? both cars?

A painting, even a commissioned painting, is not valued by area. It is valued by the artistry of the piece, the skill and reputation of the artist, and how much the buyer is willing and able to pay. These traits, of course, are not constant; the value of a piece is extremely subjective.
However, if you're talking about painting a house, you're better off to charge by the hour rather than the square foot.

An artist will charge by the square foot for murals. These are over sized works. Depending on the skill of the artists, prices may vary. I charge by the hour. I am known for the portraits that I do.

Let's see now; my paintings average about 2'X3' so that's 6 square feet each and the average price is about $3600.00 so that means the average square foot price of my work is $300.00.
That's if my math is correct and , of course, some artists charge more and some charge less. Hope that clears up your quandry.

If an artist has his prices on the wall like that....I would not call him an artist. Usually they are rated by popularity and time the painter took to make the painting.
Though size matters it hardly can be reduced to mere $/sqf.
