That is a very simple yet highly effective argument! If we were created through a meaningless, purposeless process, life itself becomes meaningless and purposeless. And when you teach people that they dont ultimately matter in any greater scheme of things, then life simply becomes a meaningless struggle to gratify your self-interests which can often lead to self-destruction and despair.

Very good question. It is simply pure torture to reflect on this condition. From a logical standpoint we are insignificant chunks of meat. However, there is this drive, an aesthetic drive if you will, that makes us want to be more than nothing. In other cases we simply want to think that all our suffering is worthwhile and is part of a grand plan.
It seems that you are suffering the same torture that I am. Unfortunately, I don't know of a resolution to the problem except to hope that one of the great and glorious myths might, just might be proven one day to not be myths after all. When life becomes unbearable and incomprehensible, we just need to let it out on our myths. Denial is the better stage of grief.

We are insignificant specks to the universe, just as ants are insignificant specks to us -- but all the same, two ants are not insignificant to each other.
We are nothing. Our little games on this planet are nothing. But as we're the only ones you're measuring against, of course we seem significant... just like two amoeba trying to consume each other.

I understand what you're saying but it's our psychology that makes us want to continue the species-same as cats, dogs, rabbits, cockroaches, etc. If you closely observe animal behavior, they have a deep instinctive desire to survive. I've never been aware of any animal dying of fright or communicating a ghost story but they run like h*ll if something is chasing them. Humans are a type of animal so we have their instincts, like survival of the species...what makes us have religion and/or faith is the fact that our brains are so highly complex, the thought/system has developed.
I read a summary of a book called 'The God Gene' that probably addresses that. I think it says that our brains have developed with a cluster of cells or a gene, something like that, that's programmed with the basics of another life theory.
Like the others said, we are insignificant to our solar systems survival but not to our friends and/or family.

I think it does matter ! Whether or not it is totally meaningless in the end is up to the individual . You have to make it into the life and the spiritual after life that you want it to be , otherwise you'll lead a miserable existence.

According to Eckhart Tolle, we are human beings, i.e., human + Beings. The human part is our external physical form, while the Being within us, is none other than, God Himself ! The spirit, within each one of us, is the same God !
COMMENTS :- As such, the concept of "Unity in Diversity." And this is applicable to all creatures / creations of God, including "those species" which are beyond human perceptions! (Just a hypothesis)

Who says our lives are meaningless? You may feel that way about yourself, but I for one think I'm the most important person in the universe. If I want to keep on keeping on, then I owe it to my fellow human beings to respect their rights to consider themselves the same.

I agree. We might not be the center of the universe, but we should care about our children, our friends, our family, etc. Who cares if the universe doesn't care... WE SHOULD.
