I presume you mean raising your little finger. Not impolite, but rather quaint - a bit like calling your little finger a pinkie, and few people have time to sail to India these days, so posh (Portside Out Starboard Home) is also rather quaint.

It's not impolite at all.
It is not commonly done in America, or in Canada - however, many 1st generation immigrants to Canada still do it. I have a friend that does because that's how he was brought up in the UK.

I only do that if I am holding the glass with my left hand. My left pinky was injured when I was younger and at times it is still a bit tender.

I wouldn't say impolite. Rather silly. It sort of shows how simple-minded one is (if it's done intentionally). Sometimes, though, ppl can't help it. It just happens spontaineously.
