The criteria for getting into heaven was set by God, not Christians. Apparently Gandhi knew about Jesus, and liked Jesus, but did he accept what Jesus said? I really don't know the answer to that, but I can tell you that if Gandhi trusted what Jesus said as being true, he entered into heaven the same as you or I would for doing the same thing.

First, just how much do you really know about Ghandi? For example, it's ironic how he refused to let doctors give his wife a penicillin shot for pneumonia that might have saved her life because it was foreign medicine, but then received a shot quinine for malaria and later had an appendectomy using that same foreign medicine. And he seems to have wavered several times on his stand on non-violence, once blessing the Nawab [an official title] of Maler Kotla's ["a Muslim Pathan state"] order to shoot ten Muslims for every Hindu that was killed there.
But I digress. Let us assume for the sake of argument that he was indeed every bit as saintly as Hollywood (among others) have made him out to be... at least compared to other human beings. However, God uses a different standard: anything less than 100% perfect isn't good enough for Him. That's what the law of Moses was meant to show us, that we cannot reach such a goal on our own. We can either keep trying and failing or we can admit our inability and humbly ask God for His help. It would appear that Ghandhi refused to do that.

First things first, Christians do not "know" who is going to hell. Secondly, the Bible teaches that if people do not have the opportunity to know Jesus, they are not held accountable (See Acts 17:30) Also, the teaching of eternal torment is actually a Catholic teaching that was borrowed from Greek Mythology in order to make money during the superstitious dark ages. If anyone reading this wants to see what the Bible really says about hell check out the source below...(It is actually quite liberating to see for yourself what it says)

Just like with anyone else if He did not serve the right "God" He will face judgment. Eternal life is not about "what" you did or "how much" you did, but about "Who You Served".
Knowing that God said the closer we get to the time of Christ's return, more and more people will turn against Him, kinda takes the surprise away from the thumbs down.

The bible teaches that only those who call on the name of Jesus Christ as their savior will be saved from hell. If Ghandi, or anyone else who dies, does not do this, then the answer is yes.
To answer the other part of your question, there is no one without sin. Even Ghandi. Therefore, since sin cannot enter the presence of God, and belief in Jesus as savior is the only way to have one's sins forgiven, then if a person refuses to believe in Jesus, they will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Yes, he is beside Mother Teresa. I have never read of her confession of faith in Jesus Christ. She was a wonderful person per se, but she was involved in human religion.
Only faith in Jesus Christ saves. Men have been rebelling against God for all of our history. Self-Righteousness is not righteousness at all.
Man is devoid of good, he is pitifully sinful. We are completely corrupt to our very beings. Those who pridefully refuse to acknowledge this will pay the price in eternity.
The greatest pain in an eternity in Hell is separation from God. People focus on the fire and worms, but it is the separation that causes this punishment to be called the Second Death.

This is one of the best questions I read here by now.
I am not christian, but I think that Gandhi could even forgive people like Joel Osteen and Billy Graham. I doubt that american television demagogues could forgive at all.

he would not be going to fundamentalist Christian heaven. the afterlife is infinite in possible worlds and each of us is measured against the feather of thoth and if our hearts are truly clean we go forward. God gives us the truth as we as individuals are best able to assimilate it, the movie "dogma" is a good allegory for this.
the heavenly reward to which Gandhi must be in would be hell for a fundamentalist Christian, to me he went to a place an instinctive follower of the one Church calls home. I do not hate the fundamentalists, I respect the convictions they hold on to and that they honestly feel they are doing their duty trying to "save" people like me. Love is love.

Wherever Gandhi belongs, he's gone there already. If he did not accept Christ, he most surely is in hell. There is no exception. It may matter to humanity that he sacrificed himself for a cause. God is not interested in personal causes. He wants to save all of humanity from their sins. If you teach someone that human love is the greatest gift of all, you make God a liar. Christ gave his very life, except he did it for the cause of everyone who ever lived, and who will ever live. And he did it to rescue us from the penalty of our sins. Forever. That is the greatest gift of all. To reject it is the ultimate case of spitting in God's face, and it will condemn you to hell for all eternity. You're saying to Him that you've found a better way than His Son's death and resurrection. To accept His gift is to escape hell, and live with Him forever. No matter who you are.

I'm not a Christian, but I'd like to answer.
Gandhi was a Hindu and, according to his beliefs, would accumulate Karma. I think that in his life his Karmic tally would have been enough to get him a really good life if not taking him from the wheel of life completely.
